Sandy Miller Elementary second grade classes enjoyed a visit to the Moapa Valley High School FFA farm on Oct. 21. The students were separated into groups to spend time in various rotations and learn about different aspects of agriculture and the farm.
One rotation taught about the farm greenhouse and drip line water system. FFA student Whitney Wickersham asked the kids about gardens at their own homes and taught them the proper word for gathering crops which is “harvest.” Students asked various questions and one was allowed to “harvest” a radish.
Another rotation gave students the opportunity to gather pumpkins and have a picture taken with a tractor before moving on to learn about milk cows.
Kids took turns milking a plastic demonstration cow, churning butter and tasting the butter on a cracker. One group named the cow “Sharon” and enjoyed visiting with the FFA students who were very patient and informative. They discussed different breeds of cows and the colors of each breed.
Another rotation taught students about honey bees. An FFA student read them a children’s book. Local beekeeper Monte Bledsoe taught them about different types of bees including queen bees and worker bees and their various roles within the hive. He described the pollination process and how the produce that humans enjoy comes from the pollination of blossoms by bees.
Students were allowed to ask questions that were answered and they enjoyed watching a display of honey bees at work.
