General Election Results In M.V. Precincts

By VERNON ROBISON

Moapa Valley Progress

The Clark County Board of Commissioners certified the Election Department’s official Statement of Votes in a meeting held on Wednesday, November 12. In each election, this document breaks down the county-wide voting results by precinct and allows specific analysis of how residents in the Moapa Valley communities voted in the 2014 General Election.

Across the southern Nevada region, and around the nation, voter turnout was lackluster in this mid-term election. Only about 41 percent of registered Clark County voters cast ballots.

In the Moapa Valley communities turnout was generally higher than that, with 2,262 voters coming to the polls, about 59% of those registered. Lower Moapa Valley precincts, in Logandale and Overton, saw a 61 percent voter turnout. While only 46 percent of Upper Muddy (Moapa) voters made a showing at the polls.

Moapa Valley precincts participated in bringing about the biggest upset on this year’s ballot. In the race for U.S. Congress District 4, local voters overwhelmingly chose Virgin Valley resident Cresent Hardy (R) for the seat. Hardy carried 81 percent of the local vote, while incumbent Steven Horsford (D) had only 15 percent.

Of course, the overall results in the race were much closer. Hardy squeaked by to win the seat with 48.53 percent of the district vote. Horsford went away with 45.75 percent.

Hardy’s Moapa Valley showing was slightly better than Danny Tarkanian (R) received in 2010 when Horsford originally won the seat. At that time, Moapa Valley favored Tarkanian with 74 percent of local votes.

Moapa Valley voters also built on the victories of the winners of the Nevada State Constitutional offices.
Governor Brian Sandoval (R) swept local precincts with 86 percent of the vote.

The winning candidate in the race for Lieutenant Governor, Mark Hutchison (R), won 88 percent of local votes. Nearest competitor Lucy Flores (D) only managed 12 percent in Moapa Valley.

Barbara Cegavske (R), who won the race for Secretary of State, took 75 percent of the Moapa Valley vote, while Kate Marshall (D) had only 25 percent.

Moapa Valley liked Ron Knecht (R) for State Controller offering him 77 percent of the vote. The nearest opponent was Andrew Martin (D) with only 14 percent of local votes.

In the race for Attorney General, Adam Laxalt (R) was the clear Moapa Valley winner with 69 percent of the vote. That compared to Ross Miller (D) who received only 22 percent locally.

The only seat in the State Legislature with a contested election for local voters was District 19, which includes Overton. Chris Edwards (R) won support of 79 percent of Overton voters in the race. His nearest opponent, James Zygadlo (D) received 15 percent locally.

It was in the Clark County administrative races where local voters differed from the final results of the election.
In the race for County Clerk, Lynn Goya (D) had a clear county-wide victory with 51 percent of the overall vote. But in Moapa Valley, her little-known opponent William Hols (R) carried 72 percent of the vote.

Locally, County Recorder challenger Don Hotchkiss (R) seized 68 percent of the Moapa Valley vote. But in the overall race, incumbent Debbie Conway (D) carried the day with 48.81 percent of the county-wide vote.

Moapa Valley voters liked Mike “Doc” Javornicky (R) for Treasurer, giving him 61 percent of the vote. But incumbent Laura Fitzpatrick (D) held onto her seat with 56 percent of the overall vote.

The local race for Public Administrator wasn’t even close. Challenger Ed Klapproth (R) took 68 percent of Moapa Valley votes. But it was incumbent John Cahill (D) who won the election with 53 percent of the county vote.

Local voters agreed that County Assessor Michelle Shafe (D) should be re-elected giving her 51 percent of the local vote. Shafe garnered 63 percent of the overall county vote in the race.

Most Moapa Valley voters also chose to re-elected District Attorney Steve Wolfson (D) giving him 63 percent of the local vote. He won the election with 72 percent of the vote across the county.

In the race for sheriff, local voters were clearly in favor of retired Metro captain Larry Burns. Burns took 78 percent of the Moapa Valley vote. It ended up being a close race, but it was Assistant Chief Joe Lombardo that ended up winning the race with 51 percent of the overall vote.

In the race for Moapa Valley Water District Board of Trustees Logandale Seat, only two the two Logandale precincts were polled. Incumbent Scott Carson carried precinct 2473, which includes the western portion of Logandale. In that precinct, Carson took 166 votes compared to the 116 carried by opponent Ryan Wheeler. But Wheeler made a much stronger showing in the eastern Logandale precinct 2476, taking 413 votes to Carson’s 331. The election was won by Wheeler on a margin of only 32 votes.

Strong local support for Overton resident Judy Metz helped catapult her to victory in the race for Overton Power District At-large seat. Metz took 66 percent of the local vote. With candidates Shawn Hughes, Bill Hurd and incumbent Steven Miller splitting the vote in Virgin Valley, this was just enough to put Metz on top of the race. She won the election by only 47 votes.

Moapa Valley voters agreed with the overall election results on two of the three state ballot questions. On Question 2, which regarded the removal of the tax cap on mining, local voters opposed the measure with 61 percent voting ‘no’. Statewide, the initiative was rejected with 50.3 percent voting ‘no’. Question 3, the margins tax initiative, was soundly defeated in Moapa Valley with 88 percent voting ‘no’. Across the state, 78.74 percent voted likewise.

On Question 1, which established a new appellate court system in Nevada, 60 percent of local voters said ‘no’. That differed from the statewide election results where 53.78 percent of voters voted ‘yes’ on the measure.
