MVRP Sets Goals To Promote Community Pride in 2015

By WESLIE STRATTON

Moapa Valley Progress

The Moapa Valley Revitalization Project (MVRP) board met on Wednesday, January 14 to discuss progress made so far and set goals for the coming year.

MVRP Secretary Jocelyn Witsken said that the organization began with seven members in 2013 and has grown to 30 members today.
“For last year our hours for 2014 were around 1,000,” she said of member volunteerism. “That’s good!”

The board discussed the importance of networking and trying to spread the word about the MVRP. One way they are promoting is through Facebook with a page titled Moapa Valley Revitalization Project Group.

“We’re working to increase our social media presence,” Witsken said. “…we need people to go ‘like’ us on Facebook.”
Another method of spreading the word is through community oriented activities like the upcoming Moapa Valley Days and cowboy poetry night.
“Cowboy poetry will be on March 13 and there will be a street fair on March 14,” Witsken said.

Another event will be the Fourth of July business decoration where businesses are invited to show their patriotic pride. A “First Friday” or “Family Friday” is under development as something the group would like to promote, however it is in preliminary stages and details are in the works.

One way that residents are contributing to the MVRP is by purchasing “dirt shirts” at Lins. The shirts promote Moapa Valley and it was said that the group is picking up at least $120 a month from shirt sales. Members expressed appreciation that Lin’s has shown a lot of community spirit and has been very helpful in its support for MVRP.

Aside from activities intended to involve local residents and boost community pride, Witsken said that the group is still dedicated to downtown revitalization and the continued development of downtown events. She said that rack cards that the group previously received a grant for are still in progress and that fingers are crossed for a future tourist kiosk of information to be placed in various locations promoting Moapa Valley.

Witsken said that the group is continuing corroboration with Las Vegas Territory tourism group and has goals to work closely with the Chamber of Commerce as well.

The next meeting will take place at the North Shore Inn on January 28 at 6:30 p.m. and is open to the general public.
“We’re having a meeting where we invite the community to meet with a ranger from Valley of Fire to voice concerns, make suggestions or just to learn more about the park,” Witsken said.
