LETTER: Take The Blinders Off Regarding Yucca Mtn.

I thoroughly enjoy reading the Progress, especially the Opinion page. But the March 25 edition was special. The Editorial that you published regarding “firsts” was fantastic.

I especially appreciate that Representative Hardy has suggested that we throw the blinders off when looking at nuclear waste storage at Yucca Mountain. There is a huge volume of research that shows Yucca Mountain to be a great choice for storing the waste from the nation’s nuclear power plants.

The only thing that I would add is that Nevada should not only demand income from storing the waste from other states, but should also require title to the waste. Someday the U.S. will embrace breeder reactor technology, as France has for a long time, and the waste we store for others will become fuel for new power generation.

I agree that Mr. Hardy is indeed a fresh, honest voice in Congress. Let’s all hope that he is able to overcome the penchant for blinders and begin to advance important matters. Yucca Mountain, and state ownership of lands, are both key in this regard.
