Moapa Baseball Secures Fourth Seed In Playoffs

By DAVE BELCHER

Moapa Valley Progress

The final week of the regular season is here for the Moapa Valley High School baseball team. The Pirates will play their final games before the playoffs this week. The Pirates have clinched at least fourth and need two wins this week for third place. Either way the Pirates are on the road next week in the first round of the baseball playoffs.

Last week the Pirates came away with a win against Del Sol 7-3 and a tough loss 9-5 against Chaparral for a league record of 8-4 and 10-8 overall headed into this final week of the regular season.

Against Del Sol at Del Sol on Monday last week, Moapa Valley took a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first; then allowed two unearned runs in the bottom half of the first for a 3-2 lead.
“Koby Frei started a little rough at the start of the game,” said Moapa head coach Gary Weiss. “He settled down and we were fine after that.”

Frei pitched three more innings for 4 total and gave up four walks striking out 4 and allowing just one hit.

JR Redd came in to start the fifth, finishing the game and allowing 2 hits 3 walks and 6 strikeouts with 1 earned run which tied the game in the fifth. He got the win in relief.

The score was tied at 3-3 as the Pirates came to bat in the top of the 6th. They gave up two quick outs before Drake Staheli came to the plate and singled. Then Dalton Wolfley singled moving Staheli to second with 2 outs. JR Redd then singled scoring Staheli giving the Pirates a one run lead with two on.

Then up came Anthony Cornwall who hit a deep fly ball which sailed over the fence for a three run homer and a Pirate four run lead all with two outs. The Pirates held on and came away a 7-3 winner.
“I was glad we came up with the two out rally,” said Weiss. “It was nice to see we could do it in a pressure situation.”

Riley Longman had two doubles in the game knocking in two RBI’s. Brendon Larsen had a double.
In their second game of the week on Thursday at home, the Pirates lost a tough one to the Cowboys 9-5. It was a four run third inning that did the Pirates in as starting pitcher Crone for the Cowboys allowed 8 total Moapa Valley hits spreading them out just enough for a complete game win.

Chaparral took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first then allowed Moapa Valley 2 runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game. Chap would get the 4 runs followed by one run for Moapa Valley in the bottom half of the third. Chap would add two more in the fifth and one more in the seventh.
Moapa Valley would come up with 2 in the bottom of the seventh four short as the Cowboys solidified the third seed in the Sunrise.

JR Redd hit a double and scored twice. Chaz Cornwall had two hits and a RBI. Drake Staheli also had two hits in the game.

Riley Longman got the loss on seven innings pitched giving up 8 Cowboy hits.
“We’ve secured the fourth seed in the playoffs at least which is a good thing; but we need to be more consistent in fielding and hitting” said Weiss.
