A special Memorial Day flagraising ceremony was held on Monday morning at the Pioneer Cemetery in Overton to honor those who have died in the service of their country. About 50 people, including a large contingent of local Boy Scouts in full uniform, attended the service.
The flagraising was performed by a select group of the local Scouts in attendance. The ceremony was done with the same precision-perfection as is customarily shown by local veterans, who usually perform the flagraising.
After the flag was raised to full height, it was then lowered to half staff in respect for the day. The crowd were then led in the Pledge of Allegiance by Eagle Scout Baxter Baker.
An opening prayer was then offered by 11 year old Scout Hyrum Bailey.
Attendees were then invited to take a moment and share brief information about their relatives or ancestors that had proudly served in the armed forces. Most of the adults in attendance remembered grandparents, parents, uncles, nephews and brothers who had served bravely in battle for their country.
Logandale resident Ben Bailey urged the young Scouts in attendance to spend some time that day in learning about their family members who had served their country.
“Take a moment to learn a little bit about what it takes to have a country where you can be free,” Bailey said. “Find out what sacrifices have been made for you.”
A final salute to the flag and moment of silence was then observed to memorialize all who have given their lives in service.
Led by Lorraine O’Dell, the crowd then sang together in a verse of “God Bless America.” And the program ended with a closing prayer given by Brandon Leavitt, of the BSA Anasazi District leadership.
