The long wait is finally over for Moapa Valley diners. A new restaurant featuring excellent Mexican cuisine is opening in downtown Overton. La Fonda Mexican Restaurant will be having its grand opening event on Monday, July 6 beginning at 5:00 p.m. The whole community is invited.

“We are excited to be opening in Overton,” said restaurant owner Rosa Kundev. “We are looking forward to adding a good thing for the people of this community and to become a part of the Moapa Valley. We appreciate in advance the support of the residents here.”

Kundev has been handling the business side of the restaurant operation. She comes from an accounting background and worked with a large company in her hometown of Victorville, California for ten years. But in 2009, she was laid off from her job.
“I was kind of scared about what should I do now,” she said. “I was ten years at one company and now all of a sudden I have no job. Meanwhile I have bills to pay and kids to feed.”

Handling the kitchen side of the business is Kundev’s husband, Sergio Becerva. He has been in the restaurant business for many years and had been a successful chef running four of his own restaurants in Victorville at the time.
“He is very good in the kitchen,” Kundev said. “He makes amazing dishes with seafood.”

The family took the loss of Kundev’s job on California as an opportunity to go out and get a new start. Becerva had a brother-in-law who lived in Mesquite. He had a friend who owned Mia’s Mexican restaurant in the Falcon Ridge area. He suggested that the family move there and step in to operate that business. So they did. That arrangement lasted about two years.

“There were some problems at that location,” Kundev said. “It didn’t really work for us.”
But the family was still convinced that the business conditions in Mesquite were good for their family-style restaurant.
“It is a small town and there isn’t as much competition as in other larger cities,” Kundev said. “We felt like it was still a good opportunity.”

So they went out on their own and opened a new restaurant: La Fonda in Mesquite. The Mexican food eatery opened in December of 2013.
At the same time, the family had been looking at Moapa Valley as a good place to start a restaurant.
“We had heard good things about this community,” she said. “We visited a few times and we really liked the town. We saw the potential for fitting in well here.”
They looked for commercial property to lease in Overton at the time. But they couldn’t find anything that would work for them.

Not too long after that, Overton resident Kay Leavitt came to visit them. He had a proposal for them to open a location in his 2800 sq foot building at 461 N. Moapa Valley Blvd. It had been the location of the Overton Medical Clinic for a long time. But that practice had closed and he was now left without a tenant.

Kundev said that Leavitt offered to help them transform the medical office into a restaurant space. He also was willing to help them work through their approvals and licensing to get the location off the ground. Kundev said that she and her husband made an agreement with Leavitt within about 30 minutes.
“He has been very good to us,” Kundev said. “We appreciate his support and help. He has worked very hard to make us happy here.”

Since then, the family has been working hard to get the building in shape to open. They opened up the previous medical office space to create a dining area large enough to seat about 50 people. They gave everything a new paint job using warm and earthy colors. They built a spacious new state-of-the-art kitchen area with stainless steel commercial grade fixtures and appliances. They also installed a service bar as well as a large walk-in refrigerator.

The La Fonda menu will offer a little something for everyone. Becerva’s specialty is seafood, Kundev said. She went down through the colorful menu listing off the seafood chef specialties that are offered. The Piña Costeña is an appetizer featuring half of a pineapple hollowed out and filled with shrimp, octopus, cheese and other seafood. The Botana estilo Sergio is another attractive appetizer featuring a generous serving of shrimp quesadillas.

The Molchajete is a huge platter piled high with a sampler of different seafood items including clams, shrimp, fish filets, crab legs, scallops; each prepared with a Mexican flair.

Of course, the menu covers the more traditional Mexican cuisine items as well; like burritos, tacos, tostadas, chile verde, chimichangas, chili rellenos and more.

Kundev adds that La Fonda also prides itself on its excellent lineup of drinks. These include extravagant seafood cocktails, delicious margaritas and other amazing concotions.

La Fonda’s Grand Opening event in Overton will take place between 5-7 pm on Monday evening. During that time, there will be a live Mariachi performing for the guests. Free appetizers and drinks will be served during the two hour time period as well. And after that, the Overton La Fonda will be open for regular business.

The restaurant will be open seven days a week from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm. A breakfast menu will be served until 11:00 am every day.
