A community preparedness fair was held at the Overton Community Center on Tuesday, August 18. The event was intended to educate the public about what local residents can do to be better prepared for emergency situations.

Participating experts who offered various preparedness tips to attendees included the Overton Fire Department #74, CERT, the Clark County Office of Emergency Management and more.

Several individuals gave presentations and displays to help promote home practices that would be beneficial not only in emergency situations but for every day life. These included alternate cooking methods, colloidal silver, do it yourself laundry soap, micronutrients, mason jars and more.

Life Skills Coach Elaine Williams attended the event to promote emotional preparedness through the use of “Emotional Freedom Techniques.” She said that the techniques that involve tapping various pressure points are intended to reduce anxiety and feelings of panic.
“Emotional Freedom is a quick technique to use to get (your brain) working again,” she said. “To use every day for anxiety.”

She said that the key is to acknowledging what the stressful issue is that is causing an emotional block.
“The brain stops working (under duress),” she said.

Common stress relieving pressure points include the side of the hand, between the eyes, the temples and chin among others. Those interested in learning more about the Emotional Freedom Technique can do so by visiting www.EFTuniverse.com.

Providing free laundry soap and spray and wash recipes was Samantha Robison who said she has been using her own homemade soap for the last seven years.
“It works as good if not better than Tide,” she said, adding that the spray and wash works well on stains.

The laundry soap consists of one third bar Fels Naptha soap grated, one half cup washing soda and one half cup Borax. The spray and wash includes one part Original Dawn Soap and two parts Hydrogen Peroxide.

Event organizer Rebecca Muhlestein, of Overton, said she was pleased with how it turned out.
“It went really well,” she said. “There were a lot of people who were able to come and learn.”
Muhlstein said that she would have considered the event a success if it were to help just one person prepare just a little bit more.
“Preparedness is the goal,” she said. “We’re hoping that somehow there can be a little more preparedness in the valley.”

Muhlestein hopes that those who attended the event will share what they learned with their friends and family members to help spread the knowledge. She is also encouraging the community to attend monthly preparedness meetings on the third Tuesday of each month at the Overton Community Center from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
