Moapa Mobile Home Catches Fire

By VERNON ROBISON

Fire caused severe damage to a mobile home near the Warm Springs area of Moapa on Wednesday afternoon last week. Fortunately, the home located at 930 Saltbrush Lane was uninhabitated at the time of the fire and no fatalities nor injuries occurred as a result of the blaze.

Local volunteer fire stations received an alarm call at around 3:00 pm on Wednesday. Firefighters from Moapa Station #72 were the first to arrive on scene. They were followed by teams from Logandale Station #73, Overton Station #74, and crews from Clark County Stations #20 and #23 from North Las Vegas. A total of 24 firefighters responded to the scene, according to Clark County Fire Department (CCFD) officials.

The cause of the fire was believed to be an electrical problem in the home’s air conditioning unit located near the northeast corner of the structure. Officials said that the fire spread quickly from the air conditioning unit into the crawl space beneath the mobile home structure.

As firefighters arrived on scene smoke could be seen billowing from the crawl space. A few minutes later, flames were observed to be coming from a vent in the roof on the north end of the building.

Firefighters quickly hooked into a nearby fire hydrant and began knocking down the fire. They were able to get the fire under control before the building became fully engulfed in flames, according to witnesses at the scene.
“They were able to successfully extinguish the fire,” said CCFD Assistant Jeff Buchanan. “But not before an estimated $40,000 of damage was done to the structure and about $5,000 to contents.”

According to witnesses at the scene, the owners of the home had only recently purchased the property and had not yet moved in with their belongings.

After the initial blaze was knocked down, firefighters remained at the scene until around 7:30 pm to be sure that all hot spots were extinguished.

  1. There are now TWO MORE houses on Saltbrush that have been vandalized and burned.

I would ventrue to say there is a serial arsonist at work in that area. The timing of 3 p.m. corresponds to students getting out of school.

I hope the local law enforcement investigators are taking note of all the vandalism of vacant properties in the area. Out-of-control teenagers would be my first guess.
