No One Asked Me But… (October 7, 2015)

By DR. LARRY MOSES

No one asked me but… President Obama, the Congress of the United States and the American military leaders have been calling for a coalition of powers to solve the issue of war in Syria. This last week they got their wish and they are not happy.

The coalition is made up of Russia, Iran, Iraq, and Afghanistan. These nations have decided to put the “boots on the ground.” America has refused to do so, waiting for the countries of the Middle East to step up. One only needs to consider the fact that those fleeing Syria are over seventy percent men in ages from 19-40 to understand that the locals are not willing to take the fight to ISIS or Assad.

Our efforts to arm and train indigenous populations throughout the Middle East have been an abject failure. At the first sign of ISIS, the American-armed and trained Iraqis ran like schoolgirls, leaving American supplied weapons to an ISIS force they outnumber better than two to one. The American four-star general in charge of the Middle East indicated that after spending over $500,000,000 America had four operatives in Syria, two were dead and one was missing.

While America has armed some of the insurgents, who are opposed Assad and carries out an airstrike every now and then, for the most part American involvement has been a token effort. America has been waiting for countries from the Middle East to step up and overthrow the dictator Assad. The coalition that America has been calling for is now formed under Russian command and is made up of countries hostile to the United States. The goal of this coalition is the stabilizing of Syria under the control of Assad. America’s goal was the removal of Assad.

One must wonder why American leaders expect dictators to line up with America when obviously our goal in the Middle East is to overthrow dictatorships. In our zeal to see all people have the same political outlook as America, we have destabilized the Middle East making it unsafe for everyone.

It is hard for Americans to understand that countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar are not really countries. They are family ranches. The countries are owned by the leaders and the people are merely living on the ranch. The sale of oil has made these landowners safe from the overthrow of their people by sharing the wealth to a point the people feel comfortable.

These countries are the greatest testimony to the fact that man seeks comfort and not freedom. Even in the countries where America has helped overthrow the legitimate government in the name of democracy, as soon as the country is turned back to the local people they set up another dictatorship, just under a different faction. All one needs to do to understand that safety not freedom is the issue for those fleeing the Middle East is to see that once in the western world, they demand the same restrictive government they were supposedly fleeing.

The Russians understand this better than America does. They do not suffer from the idealism of American democracy. The Russian goal in the area is stability.

After President Putin and President Obama met at the UN, Putin pledged to bring stability to the area. This apparently meant one thing to President Obama and another to President Putin. While Putin pledged to fight ISIS, he also saw the American backed insurgents of the Free Syria Army as a problem as well.

Feeling Assad presented the best and fastest route to stability, Russians launched an air assault in support of Iranian troops against the American backed Free Syrian Army targets. In essence, what has happened is Putin said to Obama get out of the way and we will solve the Middle East problem. Apparently, in their talks, President Obama indicated that he could live with that.

The spokesmen for the two countries pretty well summed up the issue. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the aim of the Russian involvement was to help the Syrian armed forces “in their weak spots.” Apparently, those weak spots are the American back insurgents. In reply, Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook stated that the talks between Russia and the United States were “cordial and professional.” This is political speak saying the Russians will do what they decide to do and we will get out of the way. It is our way out of supporting the insurgent groups that the Russians recognize as terrorist in the same vein as ISIS.

No one asked me but… Listening to the President’s press conference was interesting and the most interesting was his evaluation of the failure of the Republican-controlled Congress to legislate.
I often disagree with the President, however, he was right on as he called for Congress to function as the Congress is supposed to function. He called on them to pass the legislation on things like repeal of ObamaCare, illegal immigration laws, the defunding of Plan Parenthood, etc. and then allow him to veto these laws. The vetoed bill would then go back to Congress for their override. He was sure that the override could not happen but that is the way America was designed to operate.

I must agree with him. The important thing is not that the Republican-controlled Congress could or could not override the veto, the important thing is it would allow the American people to see what the Republicans stand for and then decide who to vote for in the next election. Presently Americans are only aware of the Democratic platform. By refusing to send legislation to the President, because he will veto the bill, they have surrendered to the Democrat minority.

Thought of the week….Several experts on the Middle East concur that the Middle East cannot be democratized.
– Recep Tayyip Erdogan
