Fishing The Overton Arm (January 27, 2016)

By LOREN BROOKS

fishingIf you have GPS on your fish finder, and know how to mark the location of a hotspot, you can go back to that exact location. Particularly when you have double or triple strikes all at the same time. That is exciting because you know you are into some stripers!

If you aren’t marking with a GPS, consider a floating device to mark the spot and circle around the float for other fish that may be in that school. Seeing the duck decoy stored on the top of my outdoor fridge, reminds me of Verl and Deloy using a duck decoy years ago to mark where they caught a fish and dozens thereafter by circling around the duck.

I found a number of articles about the use of markers by fishermen. Some fisherman claimed the location of a hot spot was a “secret” and did not want every fisherman on the lake moving in on their location, so they used a black colored float to mark the spot. I also read about other objects and colors for buoy markers.

One technique to control the amount of line released, (not to exceed the depth) was the use of a square piece of foam, or a block of wood to hold the string and weight. As the sinker and float is placed in the water, the block holding the line, stops releasing more line, when the sinker comes to a rest on the bottom. Where as a round device continues to unwind and the marker drifts away from the hot spot.
I plan to put my name on the duck decoy or floating object with a permanent marker, just in case it becomes lost. I sure don’t want to lose my antique duck decoy.

Jason Ham, of Overton, Nevada, went out one night this past week, with Gordon and Larry, to fish for striper with negative results. Larry’s pontoon boat was the vessel used. Jason said, maybe the temperature and the fact that it was cloudy, (when it was a full moon), was the problem. They never got a strike.
“There is more to fishing than catching fish,” he said.
But it sure is nice to catch a few. Since he claimed he had never received a loaf of sourdough bread baked by LCB, we delivered some RHB sourdough bread the next day. 777 is Jason’s lucky number for the next loaf of LCB sourdough bread.

Stan and Pat were out last week and caught 5 striper, one crappie, and one large-mouth bass. This past week was considered a slow week for catching fish. Stan holds up in this photo, he and Pat’s catch this past week. I’m looking forward to another day of fishing on the Overton Arm. Stay in touch.
