College of Southern Nevada (CSN) art student Marya Romero Hoffman, of Overton, was a big winner at this year’s Salon de Refuses Art Show held in December at CSN in Las Vegas. A former MVHS graduate and previous winner of the Moapa Valley Art Guild scholarship, Hoffman won first place in the painting portion of the contest with a still life portrait entitled “Xavier.” This is Hoffman’s third straight year winning at the show.

At the annual CSN show, students are allowed to choose 4 projects completed during the calendar year. Art entered into the exhibition must have been created under the direction and supervision of one of the CSN teachers. Categories include drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and graphic design.
After entries are complete, a juror examines the entries and chooses those that will be displayed in the CSN gallery and entered into the student art contest. This year the Juror was Jerry Schefcik who is the Director of Galleries at UNLV.

Over 300 art pieces were entered into the Salon this year, but out of those, Schefcik chose only about 30 to be displayed in the gallery and entered into the juried portion of the art show. All four of the pieces entered by Hoffman were chosen for the gallery and the juried contest.

After choosing the pieces to be judged, Schefcik awarded 5 pieces Honorable Mentions and then a first place work in each category. Painting is sub-divided into two categories: figurative and still life. Hoffman’s “Xavier” was awarded first place in the still life category. As part of her award, Hoffman received a $100 gift card to Dick Blick Art Materials.
Hoffman was excited to be chosen as a winner.
“I wasn’t able to go to the opening day of the gallery, so my instructor went for me,” she said “I was so excited when she texted me that I had won!”

Hoffman is finishing up her Associate’s Degree in Art at CSN soon. She plans to further her art studies after graduation by hopefully attending a dedicated art school, maybe back east. Her favorite mediums are watercolor and charcoal.

Hoffman’s previous wins in this show were an Honorable Mention her first year with an oil painting entitled, “Work Boots,” and a first place award last year in the drawing category for a picture entitled, “Reclining Figure.”
