Nevada Presidential Caucuses Coming Soon

By VERNON ROBISON

Moapa Valley Progress

Voters from both major parties will be gathering soon for the 2016 Nevada Presidential Caucus. For Moapa Valley precincts, both parties will be holding their Caucus at the Moapa Valley High School at 2400 St. Joseph Street in Overton. Voters from all precincts in Overton, Logandale and Moapa will caucus at that location.

This year, Nevadans will have a unique opportunity to make a major impact on the eventual presidential nominees of their parties. Nevada is holding the “First in the West” caucuses and so will be in a position to shape national opinion about the eventual party nominees.
The Democrats will hold their caucus on Saturday, February 20. Sign-ins will take place at 11:00 a.m. and the doors will be closed at 12:00 noon for the caucus to take place.
Nevada Democrats will be third in the nation to vote after the Iowa Caucus and the New Hampshire primary.

Democrat voters will choose between Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders at the caucus for presidential candidate.
Participants must be registered as a Democrat in Nevada to be eligible. The Democrat party allows same day registration for those who have not previously registered to participate. In addition, those who wish to change their party registration to Democrat on that day may participate in the caucus.

Registered Democrat voters can pre-register for the Democratic caucus at Caucus.NVDems.com. For more information, go to virginvalleydems.com or call 702-715-8403.

The Republican caucus will be held on Tuesday, February 23 beginning at 5:00 p.m.
With the South Carolina Republican primary taking place on February 20, Nevada’s caucus will be the fourth event in the national Republican primary season.

Nevada Republicans will have a long list of candidates from which to choose. These include front runners Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and Donald Trump; as well as Jeb Bush, Ben Carson, Chris Christie, Carly Fiorina, Mike Huckabee, John Kasich, Rand Paul and Rick Santorum. Huckabee, Paul and Santorum have already suspended their campaigns after lackluster results in the Iowa caucus earlier this month.
Participants must register in advance as a Republican in Nevada to be eligible in the caucus. Republicans need to be registered before Saturday, February 13 to participate.

More information on the Nevada Republican caucus is available at www.nevadagopcaucus.org.
For both parties, voters 17 years old who will be 18 on or before the November 8, 2016 general election may register in their preferred party and participate in the caucuses.

Anyone wishing to register to vote can do so at https://nvsos.gov/sosvoterservices/Registration/step1.aspx. Voter registration is also available at the local county government elections office, the post office, the DMV or by contacting the office of either the Republican or Democratic parties.
