Commissioner To Join In Muddy River Cleanup Project

Moapa Valley Progress

County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick is working together with the Partners in Conservation organization to coordinate a cleanup project along the Muddy River at Lewis Ave. in Overton. The project will take place on Saturday, March 6 beginning at 9:00 a.m. All community members are encouraged to participate.
“The primary focus of the clean up will be right at Lewis Street,” said PIC Administrator Elise McAllister. “That is where we are planning to meet.”

McAllister explained that Commissioner Kirkpatrick has expressed an interest in gaining a better understanding of the flood control concerns in the Lewis Ave area. In light of that, she asked that PIC help organize a community clean up in that area. Kirkpatrick plans to attend the project on Saturday to work alongside with local volunteers. Thus, she will be available to them in discussing their view of the flood problems in that area and hearing suggestions on what might be done to fix them.

“The Commissioner needs to be down there to see it first hand and to visually realize the scope of the problem,” McAllister said. “So this is both an opportunity to do some much needed clean up in that area, and also start a constructive discussion between the residents and the Commissioner on this much bigger flood control problem.”
Kirkpatrick has arranged for some heavy equipment to be operated by Clark County Public Works employees as part of the cleanup project on Saturday.

The project will begin at the Lewis Ave. crossing of the Muddy River at 9 am and is expected to continue until around noon. The Commissioner and PIC will provide a lunch to volunteers.
