LETTER: Advice for ‘Out-of-town Dan’

A short rebuttal and a word of advice for Dan Cloninger, the out-of-towner who spreads rumors and “word-on-the-street” gossip about our local Justice of the Peace, Lanny Waite (Small Town Justice: PROGRESS, April 27, 2016).

I have been close friends with Judge Waite and his family for nearly 25 years. I have been in his court and seen how he works. I know his background, and his professional credentials. I believe I speak for the vast majority of the valley when I say that he is fair and impartial to everybody, regardless of religion, or ethnicity. That is why he has been re-elected for nearly 30 years.

If one was to listen to Out-Of-Town Dan, you would only need to be a good upstanding member of the community to avoid being prosecuted for something like a DUI. According to Dan, one’s good works should outweigh the occasional DUI. Just let it go.

Now the advice for Out-Of-Town Dan. You say you are just passing through. Next time, do us all a favor and stay on I-15.

  1. You must not have read the same article I did, because I don’t believe that Mr. Cloninger was suggesting that someone with a DUI should not be prosecuted. His commentary was that the case has been going on for a year and a half. Given the woman’s health, it sounds like the 78 year old could be dead before it’s over. Your comment suggests that “one’s good works” shouldn’t matter because one mistake erases it all.
