It seems like every other year there is a coaching change in the Moapa Valley High School baseball program. After two years Gary Weiss has stepped down as the baseball head coach. Weiss has turned the reigns over to a former Pirate who has 35 years of baseball experience.

The new head coach is Ed McCann. McCann graduated from Moapa Valley in 1974. He was active in Pirate sports while he was a student. While attending MVHS, McCann played three years of varsity football and was on the all-state team as a senior. He also played on the Lions club football team. He played a year on the varsity basketball team. As a senior he won the state wrestling championship in the 180 pound weight class for the Pirates. And last but not least, he played four years on the varsity baseball team.

After graduating from Moapa Valley, McCann attended Southeast Oklahoma State University earning a double degree in Physical Education and English.

Ed began his coaching career in 1979 where he coached baseball at Mannfield High School in Oklahoma for seven years until 1986. From 1983 -1986 he led his team into the state tournament winning the whole thing in 1984 and earning Oklahoma coach of the year honors in 1985.

Ed moved to California and became an assistant coach at San Francisco State from 1987-1991. In 1992 he moved to Cal Poly for three years then moved to Ohlone College for a couple of years.

Ed then moved to Shreveport Louisiana where he was hired as an assistant coach at Centenary College of Louisiana. He served as assistant coach for two years before taking over the program as head coach. He served as the head coach for twelve years until July 2, 2010 at Centenary.

During that time Centenary came away with huge upset wins against several teams in the Division I Baseball. They beat #5 Nebraska 9-8 in 2001. They had a huge win over LSU who was the second ranked team in the nation in 2005. They beat Arkansas, who was ranked #6, 8-3 and then the #1 team in the land Texas A&Min College Station Texas 8-4 in 2009. Wins against Oklahoma State, Michigan State, Iowa, Indiana and Connecticut are all opponents his team had beaten.

In 2011 Ed moved on to take the head coach job for Alabama A&M. That lasted a year until some health issues came up forcing him to retire after 35 years in baseball.

Ed has met with players and parents a couple weeks ago at the Moapa Valley High School field and showed he has the energy and determination to help turn the program around into a consistent state contender.
