Veterans Day Parade & Picnic To Be Held Friday

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8336 will be teaming up with the American Legion Post 75 this weekend to present the annual Veterans Day Parade along the main street in Overton. The parade will be held on Friday, November 11 and will start at 10:00 am sharp.

Staging for the parade will take place near the North Shore Inn beginning at 9:00 a.m.. Moapa Valley Blvd. through downtown Overton will be closed at around that time. All traffic will be routed down Whitmore Street to bypass the main street area.

The parade route will start near the Overton Library, proceed through the downtown area and end at Perkins Ave.

There is no fee to participate in the parade, however donations to the veteran’s organizations are appreciated. Applications to participate in the parade are available at The Front Porch flower shop in downtown Overton. Applications should be turned in by the day before the parade.
“We have already got a lot of applications for entries in the parade this year,” said VFW official Dan Beckdahl. “And we usually see a good number come in right up until the parade day. So it should be a big event this year.”

Once again, the veteran’s organizations are making a special invitation to all local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops to join in the parade. All of these groups should meet at the Overton Library parking lot at 9:40 a.m. Participants should wear their Scout uniforms and bring their American and Troop flags to wave in the parade. All groups should also have at least one parent or leader in attendance to walk with the group.

Immediately following the Parade will be the Veteran’s Day Picnic which is held at the Overton Park. All in the community are invited to this free lunchtime event which is sponsored by the Moapa Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Beckdahl said that the VFW organization is planning to present some special awards during the picnic for community members and businesses who have helped the VFW Post over the past year in getting settled in to their new Post Home on Whitmore Street in Overton.
“We have seen a lot of people in the valley really pitch in to help us out this year,” Beckdahl said. “The community has helped a lot in getting our post home remodelled and we want to show appreciation for that help and involvement.”
