CHRISTMAS PASTORAL MESSAGE: We Can Go About Doing Good As He Did

By President Matt Messer
LDS Logandale, NV Stake

During the month of December, people worldwide have been involved in an effort to become more like the Savior, Jesus Christ. #LIGHTtheWORLD has been an amazing effort to do the things Jesus Christ did.

Each of the twenty-five days leading up to Christmas, focus was placed on a different Christ-like behavior. People were free to do whatever they liked. Suggestions were given for ways to emulate his example. Some of them were: Post your favorite scripture on social media; Offer to help an elderly person run errands; Make a list of all the things your mother has done for you, then send it to her; and

Find a picture of Jesus Christ that inspires you and place it in your home where it can serve as a reminder. These are just a few of the many suggestions of ways to serve.
The Savior went about doing good and so can we. He lived a perfect life, serving, caring and sharing. By trying to be like him, we also can serve, share and care for others.

I recently attended a Christmas reading at one of our local churches. I am not a member of their faith. I was impressed by the spirit of reverence and respect for Jesus Christ. It was very evident as they gave him honor from his birth, through his life, and his death and Resurrection.
It doesn’t matter what faith we belong to. We can emulate the Savior’s life by helping all of God’s children. What a wonderful blessing and opportunity to do so!

In Doctrine and Covenants Section 10 verse 58, we are taught that Jesus Christ is the “light which shineth in darkness.” It is Him who is there in challenging times, joyful times and in any circumstance in which we are faced.

If we consider that we, as God’s children, are often the means by which other people’s prayers are answered, may we listen to the spirit as it guides us to reach out and serve others.

What a wonderful spirit permeates this valley at this time of year. In fact, it can be felt all throughout the year. May our Heavenly Father bless each of us to always try to follow the Savior’s example as we serve others.

I leave you with a quote from President Dieter F. Uchtdorf: “As we emulate His perfect example, our hands can become His hands; our eyes, His eyes; our heart, His heart.”
