Moapa Valley Progress

3A Boys – Sunrise
Chaparral
The Cowboys have proven they are the best team in the Sunrise as they are the only undefeated team in the league.
Last week Chaparral started the week with a blow-out of SECTA 78-49. It wasn’t much of a game from the beginning as the Cowboys sprinted to a 21-10 lead by the end of the first quarter. Chaparral used their fast break to speed the pace of the game and were deadly accurate in their shooting.
Last Thursday the Cowboys travelled a short distance to Del Sol where they beat the host Dragons 80-56. Chaparral took a 21-15 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Their pace slowed down as the Cowboys lost their shooting touch and allowed the Dragons to tie the game by halftime at 31-31.

Then the Chaparral fast break kicked in as they found their touch outscoring the Dragons 24-12 in the third quarter and 25-13 in the fourth for the win.
Chaparral played Price California at Durango High School and came away with a 47-43 win over the Price Knights. The Cowboys trailed 22-21 at halftime then started the third quarter on a 13-0 lead to take control.
Price didn’t score their first point of the second half until 1:41 left in the third when two Knight free throws were made.
The Knights closed the gap to three points with 1:05 to play in the game. Chaparral scored the final four points of the game for the win.

Del Sol
In their first game of the week the Dragons beat Boulder City 56-31. The game started slow with Del Sol owning an 8-2 lead after the first quarter. The score was 21-13 by halftime. Boulder City scored nine points in each of the third and fourth quarters as Del Sol took control and expanded their lead.
Del Sol is second place in the Sunrise with a 3-1 record.

Virgin Valley
The Bulldogs won twice last week in a couple of close games.
The first was a league game against SECTA where the Bulldogs won 45-43. In Las Vegas the Roadrunners built a 19-9 lead by the end of the first half. Virgin Valley would whittle away at that lead throughout the game scoring an 11-8 advantage the second quarter. But it wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the Bulldogs pulled the game out with a 15-6 run. Devin Cox led the Bulldogs with 16 points.
The Bulldogs then travelled to Panaca where they beat the Lincoln County Lynx 60-51. The third quarter is where the Bulldogs pulled away with a 16-8 run then holding on for the win. Andrew Memott scored 12 while Cox added 11 and Jarett Tietjen scored 10. Elijah Harr and Brandy Lawrence scored 15 each to lead the Lynx.

SECTA
Besides the games they played which were mentioned above, the Roadrunners travelled to the Valley Vikings and were beaten 53-42. Valley jumped out to a 17-5 lead by the end of the first quarter. They fought their way back to trail 37-36 to start the fourth quarter. Valley then scored a 16-6 fourth quarter to get the win.

3A Boys – Sunset
Cheyenne
The Desert Shields played four games last week finishing 2-2. Both wins were league games and the fourth a huge game against northern 3A power Elko.
The first game of the week was with Mojave at Cheyenne. Cheyenne built a 23-14 lead by halftime. By the fourth quarter they had a commanding 40-25 lead. Cheyenne held on for a 61-52 win.
In their second game of the week they pounded Pahrump Valley 68-36. Cheyenne outscored the Trojans 27-9 and 27-13 in the first quarters for a 54-22 lead at halftime.

In game three Cheyenne played Canyon Springs who took control scoring a 23-17 first quarter. They added 19 more in the second quarter for a 42-28 halftime lead. Canyon Springs continued to build the lead in the third and extended it to 59-36 to start the fourth quarter. That’s when the table turned and Cheyenne outscored Canyon Springs 20-9 in the fourth cutting the lead to 12 with a final score of 68-56.
In the final game and maybe a postseason preview, Elko came south where they beat Cheyenne at Durango. This game wasn’t even close as the Indians took an 18-3 during the first quarter on way to a 46-28 win.
If it wasn’t for the huge first quarter Cheyenne would have made it closer than what the score reflected. Cheyenne score 6 points in the second while holding Elko to 8 points. Cheyenne still struggled to score in the third as they added 3 points for a 36-13 ball game to start the fourth.
