Fishing The Overton Arm (February 22, 2017)

By LOREN BROOKS

There continue to be interesting reports about Crappie being caught in the Overton Arm. I received the following report from Gary Shelley, and friends: Chaz aka “The Alaska Kid”, and “Minnesota Mark”, who reported a total of 36 Crappie over a three day stretch this past month. The Crappie were in the eleven to fifteen inch size.
“Catfish” Gary said they were in the Overton Arm of Lake Mead, when the water temperature was 54-56 degrees . They were using crappie Jigs with the best colors being green, white, clear and pink. They also used “Panther Martins” in water from 10 to 20 feet in depth.

These anglers are residents of the Echo Bay RV Village. Gary said he has been fishing the Overton arm for the past 35 years.
He, along with myself and many others, remember the days at Overton Beach, when the lake was full. The quality of the Crappie fishing was fantastic up in the Virgin Bowl, which brings back a lot of memories.

I had my daughter Carolyn and her husband Mike Nielsen, on the lake Wednesday, trolling with crank bait. But we could not match the ability of Walt and Bud who caught 23 Stripers in shallow water. Bud said I should have trolled closer to the bank.

Mike and Carolyn had not been down to Overton in over a year, so they got their license from Matt at Ace Hardware, for a day of fishing. It’s nice to know that everyone on the lake was checked for a valid fishing license by Mike, of the Nevada Fish and Game authority who was out and about Wednesday just doing his job.

Some anglers came in with some very nice Stripers. Other anglers like me and my family didn’t get skunked but sure didn’t connect with the stripers that were being caught in and around Marker 18.
Roy Dan and Lee caught 15. Stan & Pat caught 9.
Stan said they caught a Crappie last week that was 2 pounds and measured 15 inches.

Tom and his grandson had a great day last Thursday catching 9 Stripers. I hope to guide Dave and Laura from Syracuse, Utah this week, targeting Crappie in the Overton Arm , but would never turn down a nice Striper.

Keep up staying in touch. And don’t forget, if you don’t have a boat, the anglers are doing real good from the bank at Stewart’s Point using anchovies.

  1. I have lived in Vegas for 6 years now, moved here from Texas.. I really miss fishing for Crappie but I don’t know anyone here who fishes. I don’t know my way around lake mead but I need some advice on when and where is the best time of the year to catch Crappie.

I am a life long resident of las vegas. Learned how to walk on the rocks at lake mead. I have no problem catching limits of large mouth bass. Looking for crappie now. We used to drop minnows up in the muddy, in open areas around bushes. Those areas are above the water now. Not really sure where to get em now, and the lake is still tremendous when you only have one night to stay out. Any help on where those crappies might be? Thanks in advance. “Just another guy trying to get his pole bent.”
