Pirate Youth Team Hosts Marty Taggart Classic

The Pirate Youth Wrestling program hosted the annual Marty Taggart Classic on February 25. They team excelled in the regional tournament with 17 wrestlers placing within the top four spots in their divisions.

In the Premier Tournament, Tyson Houston placed 4th in a win by decision over Liberty’s Kyle Johnson. Caleb Anderson placed 1st winning by fall over Aidan Hernandez of Pistol Wrestling. Brody Redd won 4th place by fall over Jackson Buettner of Team Boulder. Lincoln Stankosky placed second, winning by decision over Colton Richter of Las Vegas Gladiators. Hayden Redd placed 3rd in his class. Trevor Van Vliet took 1st winning by major decision over Brandon Bueno of Pistol Wrestling.

In the Beginner’s Tournament, Jackson McCombs placed 4th. JJ Serrano won 1st. Asher Frye won 2nd place. Paxton Houston placed 3rd. Trueitt Ciserella took 2nd place. Mitchell Stoker won 4th place. William Anderson took 3rd and Max Bromley took 3rd place. Jaden Collmar won 3rd while Clay Whipple placed 2nd. Cropper Henry won first place in his class.

“Wrestling is a sport that takes an extreme amount of discipline, dedication, and hard work,” said coach Ryan Anderson. “These young men have spent months practicing hard, and sacrificing a lot to be able to compete against bigger, deeper teams from Las Vegas.”

Last weekend, the team travelled to Cimarron Memorial High School in Las Vegas for the SNWA 2017 Folkstyle Championships.

In the Premier Division, Caleb Anderson placed first in his class going undefeated with only two points scored against him.
“Caleb has really good body awareness and control,” said Coach Ryan Anderson. “He rarely gets in bad positions. But when he does he understands how to adjust and make the corrections.”

Trevor Van Vliet wrestled in two brackets in the tournament placing first in the HS 162-172 and also first place in the 184 bracket. He came out of the tournament undefeated.
Trevor has been a pleasure to coach,” said coach Tyson Houston. “I have never seen anyone with his dedication. He doesn’t just dream about being a champion, he puts in the work. He eats, sleeps and drinks wrestling. If he is not practicing, he is studying, wrestling.”

Other Pirate wrestlers placing high in the Premier Division included Tyson Houston who took 3rd place, Trueitt Ciserella who took 2nd, and Shandon Matheson who placed 3rd.
In the Beginners Division, JJ Serrano placed 2nd, Asher Frye placed 2nd, Trueitt Ciserella took 2nd, William Anderson placed 4th and Clay Whipple placed 3rd.
