The Moapa Valley High School Baseball team rounded out their preseason schedule with two final games, and began their league schedule with their first intra-league matchup against Chaparral last week.
The Cowboys and Pirates both came into the game on Friday as two top contenders in the 3A Sunrise Division. But before they could get to their marquee matchup on Friday, Moapa Valley first had to take on Desert Pines and Sunrise Mountain.

On Tues., Mar. 28, the Pirates traveled into Las Vegas for a game against Desert Pines. For the Pirates, the key was pitching in this game. Moapa Head Coach Ed McCann said Pitcher Tyler Peterson did well with an effective change-up. The Pirates routed the Jaguars 12-1 for their first win of the week.
“We had some timely base hits and ran the bases and it was kind of chaotic for Desert Pines’ defense,” said Pirate head coach Ed McCann.

Anthony Cornwall went 3 for 3 at the plate for the game and Dayton Wofley came up with some critical stolen bases.
On Thursday, in the midst of a wild wind storm, the Pirates hosted Sunrise Mountain. The Miners shocked the Pirates early on, putting two runs on the board in the first inning. It wasn’t until the bottom of the second inning that the Pirates responded.
It was all Moapa Valley from there on out. A massive nine-run outing in the fourth inning put Moapa over the top, winning by a final score of 17-2.

The critical moment of the game was when Anthony Cornwall hit the ball, in the words of his head coach, ‘like a missile’, into the outfield and over the fence for a home run. Cornwall finished the game with three RBIs as well.

McCann said the team’s pitching was, once again, what put them over the top. “You’re going to have an occasional break down, but all in all our pitching has been what’s kept our head above sea level,” McCann said.
In this particular game, sophomore Chase Hadley was at the mound for the Pirates.

On Friday, the Pirates hosted Chaparral in a game that was sure to be exciting. Early on, the game was pretty quiet, though. In the first inning, the Pirates were able to get three hits, but couldn’t muster any points out of it. They stayed scoreless through three innings.
Going into the fourth, the Pirates trailed 1-0. In the top of the fourth, the Cowboys put together a two out rally, scoring a pair of runs to push their lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of that inning, with Cornwall and Daxton Longman on base, Daxton’s brother, Colby, got a hit that brought Cornwall home. Chase Hadley got on base next and was replaced by speedy freshman Hayden Redd. With the bases loaded, Tyler Peterson hit a deep shot to the left field fence that brought home the Longman brothers and tied the game at three apiece.

The rally continued for Moapa Valley. Redd and Peterson eventually reached home thanks to hits by Chase Guesman and Hunter Wrzesinski. The Pirates now led 5-3.
Moapa Valley would hold onto their lead, despite a controversial seventh inning call that went in favor of Chaparral. The Moapa team won the game by a score of 6-4.
“This game says a little something about the character of our guys,” McCann said. “You need those kind of games. Chaparral is a good team and we came from behind and showed we are capable of coming back.”

McCann went on to add, “It kind of defines who they are, overcoming all of that. It is easy for you to lay down when things aren’t going well, but our guys just don’t.”
This week, the Pirates take on rival team Virgin Valley on Thursday afternoon in Mesquite.
