The Moapa Valley High School Swim Team made Pirate history last week at the 2017 Class 3A Southern Region Meet, held at UNLV. A group of eight Pirate swimmers qualified to compete in the State Championship meet this weekend. Previously only one swimmer from MVHS has qualified for State competition.

First to qualify was Zane Lamping who placed fifth in the Men 200 Yard IM at 2:42.94. This secured him a position at State. In 2013, Zane’s brother, Porter, became the first MVHS swimmer to qualify for State in the same event.
“It’s something I hoped would happen but never truly expected,” commented Zane Lamping, a junior.
Lamping went on to compete in the Men 200 Yard Relay along with Tyler Holmes, Chase LaCroix, and Samuel Jolley. There, the boys’ time of 1:45.54 earned them fifth place and a spot at State.
“The feeling is just surreal!” said Holmes, a junior at MVHS. “[I’m] so proud of the team and all the effort we’ve put in to get this far.”

The relay team of Hannah Leavitt, Leontine Adler, Abriel Leavitt, and Jaci Holmes were similarly triumphant. They placed fifth in the Women’s 200 Yard Relay. Their time of 2:07.22 also qualified them for State.
These athletes will be compete at the Carson Aquatic Center in Carson City on Saturday.

Other Pirate swimmers also did well at the southern tournament; but fell just short of being State qualifiers.
In the Women 400 Yard Relay, the team of Hannah Leavitt, Leontine Adler, Abriel Leavitt, and Jaci Holmes conducted a tight race against Western and Chaparral as the schools vied for the fifth place qualifying spot. The Pirate swimmers ended their race mere seconds after their competitors, placing seventh at 4:55.74.

Zane Lamping, Chase LaCroix, Samuel Jolley, and Tyler Holmes faced similar circumstances in the Men 400 Yard Relay, where they took seventh place at 3:54.42 after a close race against SECTA and Virgin Valley.

In the Women 50 Yard Freestyle consolations, Jaci Holmes placed 12th at 31.44.
The team of Leontine Adler, Camille Hardy, Jaci Holmes, and Hailee Heiselbetz took sixth place in the Women 200 Yard Medley Relay with their time of 2:28.54.
Hannah Leavitt made it to the top of consolations in the Women 200 Yard Freestyle with her time of 2:47.87. She placed ninth overall.

In the finals of the Men 200 Yard Freestyle, Tyler Holmes finished seventh with his time of 2:06.16. In consolations of the same event, Mitchell Lyon and Isaac Bradshaw swam close races and placed 14th and 16th, respectively, with times of 2:30.47 and 2:30.90.
In the Women 100 Yard Backstroke consolations, Leontine Adler and Brylee Watkins finished at 1:29.98 and 1:30.93, placing 14th and 15th.
Samuel Jolley took 8th place in the Men 100 Yard Backstroke with his time of 1:17.32.
