MVHS Golf Team Enjoys The Experience

After making the state tournament for only the third time in program history, and the first appearance since 2009, the Moapa Valley High School Boys Golf team hoped they could make waves. But despite these high hopes, the team was still fully aware that this year might not be the year, due in part to the tough competition. That didn’t stop them from savoring the experience as much as possible.
“We all knew that this title wasn’t ours to win this time,” said Pirate senior Logan Geary. “So we enjoyed the opportunity while we could.”

Fellow golf teammate Chase Kruse agreed with Logan on the excitement of the time spent at Spring Creek competing in the tournament. “We were really just excited and grateful to be there,” Kruse said. “All of us had a blast. We had fun as a team, as well as an overall group of all the players from the other teams. We all had a great time, despite our scores, and it was just a fun way to end the season.”

The Pirates finished sixth in the tournament, with a team total final score of 1179.
The tournament was divided into two days of golf, and Geary said Moapa Valley wasn’t left satisfied after their first day of competition, on Monday.
“Our first day was pretty bad,” Geary said. “But we didn’t let that affect us. We went out there on our second day and gave it our all.”

Despite a team average score of roughly 103 on Monday, the Pirates rallied back to average a 93 on Tuesday.
Kruse said the course at Spring Creek was tough. He described the par-71 course, saying, “Most people were shooting five to fifteen strokes more than they had all season. The fairways were narrow and the greens were unforgiving.”

Individually for the Pirates, Logan Geary put together a team high, two-day total score of 203. “I usually don’t expect much out of my golf game, so when I do meet my expectations, I feel better about it,” Geary said. “I feel like I met my expectations this time around.”

Gage Hanley and Kyle Lyon scored a 238 and 239, respectively; while Chase Kruse brought the Pirates’ fourth highest score with a 241. Cameron Larsen and Brody Leavitt rounded out Moapa Valley’s scores with a 258 by Larsen and 263 from Leavitt.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better team to spend my last tournament with,” Geary said.
He went on to thank coach, Lorenzo Delgadillo, as well as his teammates for their roles in both his personal and the whole team’s success.

After a successful season, the Pirates hope to continue driving the program in the right direction. Despite not performing to some of the expectations set by the Pirates at the state tournament, being there definitely provides confidence for future golf seasons.
