MVHS seniors Luisa Thielemann (left) and Felicia Perez (right), and sophomore Alex Peay (seated), with Pirate Flag Football coach Dave Belcher (center), celebrate after their Sunrise league win in the All-star flag football game last week.

It would be the final time that two Moapa Valley High School athletes would play in a flag football contest representing the Pirates. But there were three girls total, invited to play in the Flag football All-star game for Moapa Valley; hosted by Green Valley High School on Tuesday, May 23. Sophomore Alex Peay, senior Luisa Thielemann and senior Felicia Perez were all chosen by the football coaches from the 3A league to represent the Sunrise league against the Sunset in the last hurrah game.

Moapa Valley was allowed three for recommendation to the all-star team. The rest of the coaches voted from all the players chosen by their school coach to represent their school. All three were chosen from Moapa Valley and attended practices at Del Sol high school in preparation.
Joey Bowler the head coach of Virgin Valley coached the team of girls from the Sunrise. Bowler won the coach of the year honor after leading the Bulldogs to a state runner-up. With that came the honor of coaching this team.

Cheyenne’s head coach Anthony Johnson the Sunset coach of the year who coached his team to the state championship was honored by coaching the Sunset for the second year in a row.

The Sunset scored first when they caught Elizabeth Deleon of Virgin Valley in the end zone for a safety. The Sunset had come out with a tough defense that took the Sunrise eighteen yards backward setting up the safety for a 2-0 Sunset lead.

Mid-way through the first half Deleon caught a 24 yard pass from fellow Bulldog Kallie Graves for a 6-2 Sunrise lead. Graves found Leishman in the back of the end zone for a two point conversion and an 8-2 lead.

The Sunset made it to the 2 yard line two series later when on fourth, Felicia Perez stopped the Sunset threat pulling the flag of the runningback who was coming around the left end at the one yard line. This kept the Sunset out of the endzone saving the Sunrise from the touchdown.

The Sunset would score on their next series when E’moni Albert caught a 26 yard pass from Eleseana Patterson teammates from Cheyenne. Patterson connected with Oseguera for a one point conversion and a 9-8 lead at half time.

Graves scored from a yard out in the beginning of the second half, regaining the lead for the Sunrise. Arroyo caught the two point conversion pass from Graves for a 16-9 lead.
Patterson of the Sunset found Albert again, this time for a 16 yard pass touchdown; then was stopped for the conversion when the handoff was fumbled. The Sunset trailed 16-15 with about six minutes to play in the game.

With their final chance on offense, the Sunset was held out of the end zones on fourth down and 12 when Bailey of Boulder City stopped Hammond from picking up the first down with four minutes to play.
The Sunrise scored the final touchdown with no time on the clock when Deleon ran around the right side from 10 yards out for the final 22-15 score.

Pirate senior, Felicia Perez played an outstanding game making many tackles and playing well on both sides of the ball for most of the game. Perez has led the Moapa Valley team for two years and has been elected to the all-star game both years.

The other senior in the game, Luisa Thielemann is an exchange student from Germany where she is an accomplished gymnast. She came to the sport with almost no experience of American football. She became a team leader and a great linebacker for the Pirates.
The two seniors made a great line-backing duo with some real speed that was displayed over the last several games of the winter sports season.

The third Pirate all star, sophomore Alex Peay, played quarterback for the Pirates this year. She played corner on defense in the all-star game.

This summer the weight room will be open from 6:30 to 7:30 on Monday and Wednesday nights for girls only. That includes cheerleaders, volleyball, soccer and any girls in high school next year to come and work out.
