First Winners Announced In Local Business BINGO

The winners of the first week’s drawing in the PROGRESS’ Local Business BINGO game were Leyah Carvajal (right) who won at $100 gift card to Overton Ace Hardware, provided by the PROGRESS, and Chyler Cooper (left) who won $25 in cash donated by Washington Federal in Overton.

Last week, PROGRESS staff announced the first week’s winners in the newspaper’s Local Business BINGO promotional game.

The official week 1 drawing was held on Thursday morning. Leya Carvajal was the winner of a $100 gift card to Overton Ace Hardware. And Chyler Cooper won a special packet of crisp, new $1 bills donated by Washington Federal in Overton.

Local Business BINGO is part of a two-month celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Moapa Valley PROGRESS.
“We are excited to be offering this to our readers,” said PROGRESS editor, Vernon Robison. “It is a lot of fun giving out these prizes as kind of our birthday party presents to our readership.”
Robison said that the newspaper staff had spent some time earlier this year brainstorming on ways to celebrate this 30th anniversary milestone.

“We were looking for a way to really highlight the newspaper’s role, over the years, as a promoter and cheerleader of local business,” Robison said. “This idea came across as a great way for us to just pay tribute to our fantastic local business sector. But it also serves a function in hopefully driving traffic into those local stores during what is traditionally a slow time of the year: late summer.”

Local Business BINGO is a game that encourages interaction between business owners and local residents. Each week, an official game board will be published on one of the pages of the PROGRESS. Readers simply clip out that page and take it with them, throughout the week, as they visit local businesses.

As readers go into a business included on the game board, they just ask the store owner or employee to stamp that space on the game board. No purchase is necessary to receive a stamp.
After the contestant collects five different stamps for the week, they just bring their game board back to the PROGRESS office to be entered into a weekly drawing for great prizes.

Some of these prizes will be donated by the local businesses. But most of them will be provided by the PROGRESS as part of its 30th anniversary celebration. All of the prizes, however, will be for products and services offered in the local businesses listed on the game board.
“It was important to us to make sure that the prizes also showcased our local businesses,” Robison said. “Those businesses are, in so many ways, the lifeblood of the community and we wanted this promotion to be, 100 percent, all about them.”

There are still 6 weeks left of Local Business BINGO. The game will continue through the week of September 6. There are a lot of great prizes still to come. So clip out your gameboards, hit the streets, and stop in at your participating local businesses to get those BINGO cards stamped. Good luck, Moapa Valley!
