Local residents participated in a project last week that promises to add not only color, but good will, to the Moapa Valley community. A unique rock painting activity took place at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension on Wednesday, August 9.

The Kindness Rocks Project is a movement that originated in Cape Cod, Massachusetts with a woman named Megan Murphy. The Project’s goal is to spread kindness and positivity into the world with rocks painted with affirmative messages left on the ground around communities.

During the local event, community members came together at the Cooperative Extension to paint numerous rocks with joyous messages and images in hopes of elevating the spirits of those in the community. Individuals from every corner of Moapa Valley took part in this immense undertaking of kindness. The event was held in a classroom at the Cooperative Extension office and organized by Lacey Sproul, the local 4-H Program Coordinator.

At this artistic way station of stone and paint, people of all ages combined their creativity with their passion to help others by creating masterpieces of vibrant colors and wholesome inspiration.
As brushes swished, the goal of the Kindness Rocks Project came one step closer to its realization. After the painting was complete, the rocks were given a finished look with a clear top coat. A few days later, they were deposited at various locations throughout the community for all to see. These spots included the Overton library, the Cooperative Extension office, local schools, and other public locations.

Anyone and everyone from the Moapa Valley area and beyond are welcomed, and encouraged, to find and enjoy the rocks distributed in the locale and even paint some rocks of their own to add to the inspiration.

Another way to help is to spread the word about the Kindness Rocks Project on social media with #thekindnessrocksproject.

On the Project’s website (www.thekindnessrocksproject.com/), information about the early days of the Kindness Rocks Project are available. The locations of other local projects across the world, text posts of the inspirational stories of people from a variety of different places, and a plethora of other information can also be found there.
