This summer the PROGRESS has been celebrating its 30th anniversary. The newspaper began operations on September 2,1987 under the direction of its founder John Z. Robison. Since that time the PROGRESS has covered three decades of community issues, news stories, local businesses, youth sports, politics, elections, Moapa Valley personalities and much more.
To celebrate, we are highlighting the PROGRESS’ role in documenting the day-to-day goings-on in the Moapa Valley communities. We have selected some of the more interesting stories which have appeared in past editions.
So keep an eye out for the PROGRESS over the next few weeks. There will be plenty to look back on; and look forward to.
Editor’s Note: The following story was published on page 2 of the first edition of the Moapa Valley PROGRESS during the week of September 2, 1987.
FROM THE EDITORS
Answering the cries of Moapa Valley residents and businesses, we are proud to announce the publication of a bright, informative, and exciting newspaper: The Moapa Valley PROGRESS. The paper will be printed every week and will be mailed to all residents of the greater Moapa Valley area.
The community newspaper should act as a vehicle in uniting the various business and commercial interests into one unified progressive force, all working together.
In each issue you will see articles of interest to all households: in-depth coverage and investigative reporting on the important issues that affect us all; sports scores, schedules and reports, both from the local schools, and the colleges and professionals, too; favorite recipes; tips on gardening and landscaping local events such as births, deaths, weddings, and anniversaries; important national news, especially events that affect the residents of southern Nevada; and many more subjects too numerous to mention.
You will also see many photographs of the news, and photographs that need no written word.
Most importantly, the Moapa Valley PROGRESS will print articles and photographs submitted by you, the residents of Moapa Valley. We feel it is vitally important that we print the news and VIEWS that you feel are important. We want to encourage you to submit your news, stories, and ideas for stories often.
Journalism is news gathering, fact finding, reporting. It is important in Moapa Valley as well as the rest of the world. It is indispensable in our democracy. People cannot govern themselves without being informed. No matter what changes occur in the future –social, economoic, political or other, the function and goal of the Moapa Valley PROGRESS is to find out what is going on and to trnasmit that information to others, together with a proper explanation of its significance.
To do this, we will need your help and your support. In return, we will do all we can to make the Moapa Valley PROGRESS the kind of paper you want it to be.
