The diversity, storytelling ability and educational knowledge of the staff and volunteers were in full view over the weekend at the Lost City Museum.
A flurry of activity was going on outside where they museums Kid’s Day activities were taking place. The volunteers of the museum were busy showing and training the young students in the crafts and arts of the early Native Americans. From grinding corn into flour, to creating Corn Husk Dolls (or No Face Dolls), to creating Rain Dance Sticks and painting Pueblo Boxes; these youngsters were kept busy for several hours.
The youth were then taken on a short tour of the pueblos on the grounds of the museum and through the museum itself. The event ended with a nourishing snack and gift bags.
The eager students are given their creations and head for home with their newfound information.
But there was excitement inside the museum as well. Walking into the main room of the museum one is greeted by the colorful and humorous art work of current exhibitor for the month of October: artist Susan Perez. Her show “Embracing The Beauty of Art” includes oils of colorful flowers; such as red tulips and peonies; humorous pictures such as “A Day In The Orchard” where a small hand reaches for an apple to a cowboy roping a dog with a slight grin on the boy’s face to the dog’s wary eyes; and charming penciled desert frogs. Adding a bit of glitter to the exhibit was a tree filled with bejeweled spiders and dragonflies.
