Locals Organize Drive To Help Homeless Youth

By STEPHANIE BUNKER

Moapa Valley Progress

A few tender-hearted Logandale women want the homeless children in both Moapa Valley and Las Vegas to stay a little warmer and have a few of the items they need for the winter.
Judy Smith and Cindy McMurray, both of Logandale, have teamed together to put on a drive collecting socks and travel-sized hygiene products for homeless youth ages 12-21.

Smith states that there are 14,000 homeless youth in Las Vegas. “I was absolutely astounded at how many youth are homeless in Clark County,” she said.
She recalled watching the news when Lanette Rivera who, is part of the Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth, was being interviewed and information about the homeless youth was given. That was when Smith knew she had to act. She called Rivera and got specific items that youth often ask for. These included socks and travel size hygiene items, including feminine hygiene. They explained that they have their backpack carrying all of their personal belongings so the donated items need to be able to be carried around easily.

Smith said she has helped with fundraisers before but has never gone about starting one herself. So she looked for help and found Cindy McMurray.
“I didn’t have any idea that there is that many homeless youth,” McMurray said.

Immediately the two began preparations to gather the needed items. During their planning and spreading information the women also learned that there are several homeless youth here in Moapa Valley. They want to take care of the needs of the few youth here at home and send everything else into Las Vegas.
“Its cold this time of year and socks are important,” McMurray said,

The women will be collecting donated items until December 13 and have arranged for two dropbox locations. The first drop box is at the Inside Scoop. The other is at Sage Health. Once again they are looking for warm socks and travel size hygiene products, which include feminine hygiene.

All of the donated supplies will be sent to Cappalappa Family Resource Center and Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth. For more information call Judy Smith at 702-398-3392.
