State 3A Basketball Preview (December 6, 2017)

Boys Southern 3A- Sunrise
Boulder City
The Eagles played five games last week and finished undefeated. They won the Lake Mead Invitational tournament.
The Eagles started the season with a home game last Tuesday against Basic High School. They beat the Wolves 71-60. Boulder City held a three-point lead at halftime 36-33.
The Eagles were lead by Derrick Thomas with 15 points and 5 rebounds. Karson Bailey scored 14.
They played Lincoln County in the first game of the Lake Mead Holiday Classic coming away with a 53-41 win in the first game of two for the Eagles on Thursday. The game started slow as Boulder City lead 5-4 after the first quarter. They out-scored the Lynx 17-10 in the second quarter then held on for the rest of the game.
Clayton Pendleton was the leading scorer for the Eagles with 14 points.
They played Fernley in the second game of the day using a 22-14 first quarter to build a lead. The Eagles outscored Fernley in the third quarter as well 14-7 then held on for a 57-47 win.
Friday the Eagles beat Slam Academy of Las Vegas 59-41. Carson Balistere scored 21 points in the game to lead Boulder City.
With the win the Eagles advanced to the championship game of the tournament against Spring Creek. In that game Boulder City held a 15-23 lead after the fist quarter then a 24-17 lead at halftime. The Eagles erupted for a 21-5 third quarter and held on for a 62-32 win. Thomas scored 13 points.

Chaparral
The Cowboys were 1-1 last week with two home games. The first game was against last year’s state runner-up Cheyenne.
The Desert Storm beat the Cowboys 55-40. The halftime score was 21-13 just before a 20-15 third quarter. Damion Bonty scored 14 to lead Cheyenne. Jonathan Tendale scored 19 for the Cowboys in the home loss.
The second game for the Cowboys was against Basic High School. Cowboys held a 34-23 lead at halftime. Basic made a big comeback but fell just short to lose, 61-59. Tendale scored 23 points to lead the Cowboys.

Del Sol
The Dragons were 1-2 last week with a loss to start the season against Silverado 56-41. Del Sol scored just 3 points in the first quarter and trailed 12-3. Del Sol cut the lead to five by halftime with a 19-15 run in the second quarter. Del Sol went cold in the fourth quarter scoring just 6 points.
In the second game of the week Del Sol came away with a 60-57 win over the Pahrump. The Trojans held a 27-22 lead at halftime before the Dragons out-scored a 28-20 run in the second half for the win. Nati Asfaw scored 14 points to lead Del Sol. Brayden Severt scored 12 to lead Pahrump Valley.
Sierra Vista blew out the Dragons in the third game of the week for Del Sol, 60-39. Tyrell Hampton lead Del Sol with 13 points in the game.

Sky Pointe
The newest member of the 3A Sunrise, the Sky Pointe Eagles, were 2-0 last week with a 63-45 win over Green Valley Christian and a win over Indian Springs 63-54.
In the first game the Eagles held a 28-13 lead by halftime and held on for the win. Danny Cox and Treveonne Swift each scored 15 points for the Eagles.
Against Indian Springs, Sky Pointe built a 31-15 lead in the first half, then held on for the win as the Thunder-birds out-scored the, 39-32 in the second half.

Virgin Valley
The Bulldogs struggled last week. They were beaten three times and had just one win.
The Dawgs were blown out by Sunrise Mountain 73-50 in the first game of the season. It was a 28-13 third quarter for Sunrise Mountain that made the difference. Jayden Perkins led the Bulldogs with 24 points. Steven Adeyemi scored 19 for the Miners.
In their second game of the week, the Bulldogs lost to West Wendover, a 2A school from northern Nevada, 73-51. The Dawgs were out scored in every quarter including a 37-23 run through the second half. Perkins scored 16 points to lead the team.
The Bulldogs would get their only win of the week against old rival Lincoln County. They started the game with a 21-10 run building an 11-point lead. The Dawgs held on as the Lynx out-scored them the rest of the way. The final score was 51-50.
Perkins again led the Bulldogs with 22 points Cade Anderson added 16.
It was Fernley’s turn to beat the Bulldogs. The Vaqueros trailed 14-8 after the first quarter. Then a 20-8 run in the second quarter and a 17-5 run in the fourth ended with a 54-43 Fernley win. Anderson lead the Bulldogs with 9 points.

Boys Southern 3A- Sunset
Cheyenne
Last years state runner-up played five games last week and finished with a 2-3 record. After a 55-40 win over Chaparral (see above), Cheyenne beat Green Valley 72-41 at Legacy. Cheyenne then lost to Centennial 73-56 and Clovis East of California 56-54 followed by a loss to Arbor View 55-47.

Mojave
The Rattlers finished 2-3 last week with wins over Legacy 78-75 and Crenshaw of California 62-61. They were beaten by Shadow Ridge 63-53, Democracy Prep of the southern 2A 70-50 and Centennial 75-49.

Pahrump Valley
The Trojans were 0-2 last week with losses against Del Sol 50-47 and Bonanza 69-52. Brayden Severt lead the Trojans with 12 points against Del Sol while Antonio Fortin scored 35 points against Bonanza.

Sunrise Mountain
The Miners were undefeated at 3-0 last week with wins over Virgin Valley 73-50, Word of Life 99-67 and Somerset-Losee 74-39.

Western
The Warriors lost their only game last week 51-32 against Spring Valley.

Girls Southern 3A- Sunrise
Boulder City
The Eagles started last week 2-2 with wins against Calvary Chapel 42-29 and Lake Mead 55-23. Keely Alexander led the Eagles with 9 points. Madison Manns and Hanna Estes each scored 11 to lead the Eagles in the Lake Mead win. The Eagles lost to both Basic 47-27 and Clark 42-29.

Chaparral
The Cowboys are 0-3 to start the season with a 48-20 loss to Rancho, 65-36 loss to Cheyenne and 51-50 loss to Basic.

Del Sol
The Dragons beat Silverado 22-21 in the first game of the season. They lost to Pahrump Valley 39-20 then to Sierra Vista 49-22.

Sky Pointe
The Sky Point Eagles finished their first week in the 3A with a loss, 43-21, against Green Valley Christian.

SECTA
The Roadrunners are 0-3 to start the season. They were beaten by Bonanza 38-21, Valley 52-40 and Eldorado 40-39.

Virgin Valley
The Bulldogs finished their first week 2-2. They beat Sunrise Mountain 53-38 with Taylor Barnum leading them with 12 points. They beat Calvary Chapel 58-23 in the first round of the Lake Mead Holiday Classic. They were beaten by Lincoln County 40-38 in the second round and beaten by Clark 41-39 in the third round. Savanna Price scored 15 points to lead Virgin Valley against Clark.

Girls Southern 3A- Sunset
Cheyenne
The Desert Storm finished 1-3 last week with their lone win against Chaparral 65-38. They lost to Liberty in the Liberty Invitational 80-42, They were beaten by Arbor View 49-34 and Faith Lutheran 64-55.

Desert Pines
The Jaguars lost their only game last week to Cimarron-Memorial 49-12.

Mojave
The Rattlers lost their only game last week to Shadow Ridge at home 65-35.

Pahrump Valley
The Trojans have started off hot with five wins last week. A 39-20 win over Del Sol. They beat Bonanza 33-25, Parker Arizona 27-23, Kingman Arizona 36-19 and Needles 43-23.

Sunrise Mountain
The Miners are 2-1 after the first week. They lost to Virgin Valley, 53-38, then beat Word of Life, 50-30, and Somerset Losee, 59-7.
