MVHS Flag Football Beats Mojave, Loses To Clark

By GANNON HANEVOLD

Moapa Valley Progress

The Moapa Valley High School Flag Football team faced two tough road contests last week against Mojave and Clark.
The first game of the week came on Wednesday, a road game against the Mojave Rattlers. It was a thriller!

In the first half, the Rattlers struck first, with a 6-0 lead at the intermission. While neither side’s offense could get going, the defenses remained the centerpiece of the hard-nosed game.
Then, just when they needed it most, the Pirates found their offense. It came with a touchdown pass completion from Alex Peay to Maxime Van der Laan. Van der Laan would finish the game with 143 receiving yards, a large majority of Peay’s 187 total passing yardage.

Most importantly, the game was tied at 6-6, and now would be headed to an overtime period.
With the first possession of overtime, the Rattlers scored a touchdown and were able to get the extra point conversion as well. The score was 13-6, in favor of Mojave.

The Pirates then had a possession with the ball, and needed a score to stay alive. Sure enough, Alex Peay found yet another receiver for a touchdown, this time the six points coming through the arms of Jessica Leon.

Rather than tie the game at 13 and play for a second overtime, Moapa Valley head coach Dave Belcher elected to roll the dice and send out the team for a two point conversion. Alex Peay took the snap and looked for receivers in the endzone but couldn’t find any. She scrambled towards the goal line and held out the ball. At the last possible second, it broke the plain and the Pirates left triumphant, by a score of 14-13.

Following the thrilling road victory, the Pirates would travel into Las Vegas once again on Friday to take on Clark. The Chargers came out dominant and scored 20 points in the first half, certainly a frustrating start for Moapa. Late in the second half, the Pirates added a score to narrow the lead some. But it was too little, too late. The final score would be 20-6. This loss dropped the Pirates to 2-5 in the preseason.

Moapa Valley will wrap up the preseason set of games this week with road tests against Spring Valley and Sunrise Mountain. The Pirates hope to channel the excitement they were able to grab after their win against Mojave, and use it as confidence going forward.
