CHRISTMAS PASTORAL MESSAGE: Christ As The Everlasting Father

By Pastor Scott Adams
Lake Mead Baptist

I love Christmas time. Every year my mind focuses on some unique aspect of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

This year the Lord has brought me back to Isaiah 9:6, which is one of my favorite Christmas verses. “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” (KJV)

This year the title given to Jesus which caught my attention is “The Everlasting Father.” What does it mean to call Jesus my Everlasting Father?

As a Christian, when I first contemplate this title for Jesus it seemed a little confusing. Christians believe in the Trinity; it is a fundamental doctrine of Christianity. The term Trinity expresses our belief that there is only One God, who exists as three distinct divine persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, who are co-eternal and co-equal. We normally refer to Jesus as God the Son, not Father.

As I looked at the word father throughout the Bible, it is used in various ways. In the Hebrew it is used in three main ways: in the modern sense, as a dad; as the source of something (Gen 4:20-21); and as one who is a benevolent ruler. In these last two categories I can clearly see Jesus fulfilling the title of Everlasting Father.

The Bible clearly testifies to Jesus being my source and my benevolent ruler, for which I am eternally grateful. Jesus is my creator (John 1:3, Col 1:16) and my King (Acts 20:28; 1 Cor 6:20; Col 1:13; Eph 2:19). He created and sustains me in every way and has transferred me from the kingdom of darkness into His eternal Kingdom. His death upon the cross paid for all my sins (Rom 5:1, Rom 5:8-10, Col 1:20, John 3:16). He gives me peace (Col 1:20, John 14:27) and all the righteousness I need (Phil 3:9, 2 Cor 5:21). All the righteousness I need to enter into His presence is given to me the moment I believed in Him. I definitely don’t deserve His righteousness and I can’t earn it through good works (Eph 2:8-10). It is simply a gift. He also guides me through His word and through the Holy Spirit, who has come to dwell in me (John 14:16-17). He also gives me rest (Matt 11:28-30) and walks with me on a daily basis. He cares for me in so many way that it would take eternity to recount.

There is one other thing about Jesus’ title, Everlasting Father, that we need to contemplate, the word Everlasting. My earthly father was a good man, but since he has gone on to be with the Lord, I can no longer call him up and ask for his help. This is not the case with Jesus. He is everlasting which means there will never be a time I can’t call upon Him or talk to Him. The Hebrew word we translate everlasting actually means forever, with the idea that he has been father forever. There are various passages that clearly tell us that Jesus has always been and will always be (Micah 5:2, John 1:1-3, John 1:14, John 8:58, Rev 1:8, Rev 22:13). According to Revelations, Jesus is eternal with no beginning and no end. There has never been or never will be a time that He will not be there for His people.

In Jeremiah 31:3 the Word says, “He has loved his people with an everlasting love.” Jesus our Savior has always been and will always be One who loves you and desires to be a father to you. Jesus does not want to rule over you like a tyrant, but as a loving Father who is always looking out for your well-being. He willingly walked to the cross and died in your place. He paid the price for all your sins and He will give you His righteousness, which is all you need. This gift is not automatic, but must be accepted by trusting in what He has done on the cross, not what we are capable to doing (John 3:16, Eph 2:8-9). Once you have become His child, then He will be an Everlasting Father to you. He will guide you and care for you and he promises in Hebrews 13:5 to never leave you not forsake you!

This Christmas as we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, it is my prayer that you will accept the gift of salvation that He freely offers. May the love and peace of Christ fill you this Christmas season. God Bless you all from Lake Mead Baptist Church!
