It was a rough week for the Moapa Valley High School Boys’ Basketball team. The Pirates played two games, one of which was a league game against Del Sol. It was a must win situation for the Pirates to maintain any chance for the playoffs.

The first game the Pirates played was on Tuesday, Jan. 30 against 4A Rancho in Las Vegas. Rancho is 8-17 overall and 1-5 in the Northeast.
The Pirates have lost leading scorer Nathaniel Thompson for the final two weeks of the season because of a broken hand he sustained in the Alamo game.

Rancho used a 17-8 first quarter to build a nine-point lead. Moapa Valley trailed 36-22 at halftime.
Like several of the games this year, the Pirates struggled in the third quarter. Rancho scored 23 points while the Pirates fought to score at all with just six-points in the third quarter.

The game had each team shoot nine free throws. Moapa Valley made seven while Rancho made just four.
James Brown lead the Rams in scoring with 16-points, Tejai Washington scored 15 and Frank DeGourville added 14.
Derek Reese led the Pirates with 17-points while Josh Cox scored 14-points.
The Pirates outscored the Rams 19-11 in the fourth quarter. But the final score was still a 70-47 loss for Moapa.

Del Sol travelled to Moapa Valley on Thursday night for a must-win game for the Pirates. Del Sol used a 19-6 run in the third quarter to take a commanding lead for a 67-46 win. This eliminated the Pirates from any chance for the post season tournament.
Reese once again led the Pirates with 15-points. Lucas Walker added 11-points.
Del Sol held a close 17-16 lead to start the second quarter. The Dragons pushed the lead to 33-26 by halftime. They outscored the Pirates 15-14 in the fourth quarter for the final.

Four Dragons finished the game in double figures. Antonio Simpson scored 16 points to lead the Dragons. Tyrell Hampton and Nati Asfaw each scored 13 while Keith Seldon added 12 points.

This week the Pirates travel to Boulder City on Tuesday. They then will finish the season on Thursday night with senior night against Sky Pointe.
