The Overton Senior Center welcomed the community on February 14, to share in a special Valentine’s Day dinner and to build friendships in an evening filled with good cheer.

The evening began with vocalist/flutist Jane Solomon and pianist Marquessa Aikele entertaining the crowd with the music of the season including “Can’t Help Falling In Love With Love” and “Taking A Chance On Love.”

I asked young Braxton and Austin Henstra what they enjoyed about these get-together evenings. Braxton enthused that he liked the dances and Austin stated he liked how everyone gets together.
Soon the MVHS National Honor Society members Morgan Aikele, Bailey Bunker, Kessa Evans, Hailee Heiselbetz, Daesy Parra and Sierra Staheli were serving the delicious chicken dinner prepared by chefs Regan Whited and Jack Johnson.

The 50/50 drawing and door prizes were awarded. These gifts were graciously donated by local merchants: Hair District, True Value, Overton NAPA, Cal’s Repair Center, “Biker” Bob, Wes & Leta Fisher, Sage Health, Alicia’s Grooming, Ace Hardware, La Fonda Restaurant, Drs. Robertson and Staley, Pirate’s Landing, America First Credit Union and The Front Porch Flowers and Gifts.

Gifts of complimentary tickets to the MV Performing Arts Council presentation of Brandon and McKenzie Lee were awarded to those who were born in ‘the year of the dog’ or to those who were married or born on Valentine’s Day.

The Sr. Center Line Dancers began the dancing portion of the evening by inviting community members to join in learning a basic line dance. Then an Open Free Style Line Dance was held to the amusement and delight of the diners.

The Kountry Kicker Line Dancers then joyfully danced to “Lollypop” and a social dance ended the celebration.

It was an evening celebrating a day of love which started in 496 when Valentine was added to the Catholic register of officially recognized Saints. St. Valentine’s Day was associated with love by the late 14th Century.
