Fishing The Overton Arm (April 25, 2018)

By LOREN BROOKS

Wow! There were a lot of fish being caught recently by a lot of anglers using the Echo Bay Marina as a starting point – going north and going south. It didn’t matter. Everyone I talked to, with few exception, had a nice catch of fish.

Bank fishing must be good all along the arm by fishermen who are using spin casting rods and anchovies for bait.
Last week and the week before, when the captains found calm weather, they and their friends loaded up on stripers.
I had a great day fishing with John in the jet boat last week.

This week I took my brother Roy out in our Star Craft. He has been recovering from a back bruise which has kept him off the lake for about three months. We went south around 9:30 am, which was the ideal time if you consider the moon charts. We started trolling with anchovies, using a 1 ounce slide sinker and leaded line.

The usual question by fellow anglers is “how many colors out?” When I ask Art and Ardeen, who fish in a “Lund”, she always tells me she counts the line by pulling off the real at arms length, 15 times. I use a line counter, which indicates my line was out about 125 feet.

We had doubles right off the bat. I figure we had well over 20 strikes that morning and by 12:45 pm we had 12 stripers in the live-well.

My brother still has the touch. He turns 91 next month. I hit 85 this month. I wonder just how many stripers we have caught in the Overton arm over the years? I wonder how many stripers have been caught each day by anglers who put in and launch at Echo Bay.

If you take a drive to Echo Bay you will see a big clean-up operation going on in the old harbor. Most of the tires have been pulled out and the old docks are being crushed and hauled away.

Have a great summer, everyone. The guys at Ace Hardware, say it is really good fishing from now on. They suggest that the snow birds stick around to check it out. Best regards.
