The Moapa Valley High School FFA chapter recently held its annual end-of-year banquet, awards, and new-officer installation ceremony. The event includes not only students and their parents, but other members of the community that have supported or helped the chapter and its members throughout the year. Past FFA members are also invited to come, celebrate and be recognized.

Those in attendance were invited to enjoy a dinner of Navajo tacos, provided by Glen and Cheryl Rawson, while enjoying a slideshow of FFA students and activities that took place throughout the year.
A series of awards and other recognitions followed.

Thirteen FFA members were awarded their Greenhand Degrees. This is the first in a series of four degrees that FFA members can earn by meeting a series of strict requirements including leadership, projects, service, and time, among other things.

Seven members received their Chapter Degrees, the second level degree. One member, Shyanne Matheson, received special note for receiving her State degree, which was presented in Reno at the FFA state convention earlier this year.

Chapter officers reported on important achievements this year including local teams winning first place in the state for homesite evaluation, third place for soil evaluation, second place for milk judging, fifth for ag mechanics, sixth for livestock judging, and seventh for floriculture, to name a few. Proficiency awards were also given out to Mackenzie Kephart for poultry production, Cassidie Jones for equine science and agricultural education, Ryan McMurray for diversified livestock production, and Shyanne Matheson for beef production. Mackenzie Kephart was also awarded the Star Chapter award.

FFA students are able to receive college credit as well as Workplace Readiness certifications while still in high school after only three years of participation. Students qualifying for these certifications included Jesse Robison, Sarah Adams, Shyanne Matheson, Makae Pulsipher, Kelly Robison, Olivia Williams, and Cassidie Jones.

Graduating seniors were presented with a special sash that they will be able to wear during graduation. Current officers were also thanked and recognized for their year of service.

The most highly anticipated announcement of the evening was the new officer team for the upcoming 2018-2019 school year. Officer candidates go through a rigorous process and are ultimately chosen by a panel of interviewers not related to the local program. This year there were 13 applicants for the seven officer positions. Ultimately, the panel deemed all applicants worthy of a position and transformed the officer titles to meet the restyled organization they envisioned.

The new FFA president position was given to Shyanne Matheson. She will be aided by vice presidents Olivia Williams, Mackenzie Kephart, Cassidie Jones and Ryan McMurray; with Makae Pulsipher as Secretary and Sarah Adams as Historian. Committee Chair positions were given to Emily Leigh, Bronc Barlow, Haley Hall, Andun Pratt, Maddy Frederick, and Kelly Robison.

Outgoing president, Tatyanna Bullock expressed her feelings about her last year in FFA. “It was definitely a life-changing experience,” she said. “I learned a lot of leadership skills, speaking skills, and how to work as a team. I had a lot of fun, too. I will really miss being part of MVHS FFA, but I’m excited for next year’s officer team.”

Incoming president Shyanne Matheson expressed excitement for the upcoming year. “I’m really excited,” she said. “I learned a lot this year as vice president about how FFA works and I’m excited to put what I’ve learned into practice next year.”

FFA adviser Denise O’Toole said that the year-end banquet is always a bittersweet occasion as they celebrate the past year and say goodbye to the graduating seniors.
“FFA develops leaders and I’m impressed with the leadership skills our students demonstrate,” O’Toole said. “I’m looking forward to their ideas and the activities they will choose to carry out. I appreciate the dedication that our graduating officers and active members have demonstrated over the years and we will truly miss them.”
