Parks and Rec Has Programs To Cure Summer Boredom

By JENNA RHUDE

Moapa Valley Progress

There is one phrase common heard throughout the summer in most households: “I’m bored!” Well Clark County Parks and Recreation Moapa Valley located in Overton is here to help alleviate your child’s boredom.

The Progress visited the Rec Center this week and learned about new events that will be happening this summer. Better yet, some of them are FREE. Be sure to contact Parks and Rec or check their website for age requirements, times, dates and fees.

Starting on June 18 and running through August 2 are three programs for young children: ages 3-6. First is Block Play which will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2-3 PM. It provides a wide range of buildable toys, including building blocks, Legos, Squigz and many others.

Obstacles and relays is another young kid program starting June 18. This program provides an opportunity for participants to use their energy in a variety of challenges, games, activities, obstacle course and relay races.

Tiny Tots Sports will begin on Wednesday, June 20. In this program kids will participate in fun games and drills that introduce them to dribbling, throwing and passing. Some sports introduced will be, basketball, soccer, baseball and track and field.

Programs for the older kids include: Robot Sumo, Youth Boxing, Beginning and Advanced Theater and the Challenge Room.

Robot Sumo is a class that helps participants learn how to build a sumo robot out of KNEX components and then to program the various sensors. They can then challenge their robots against various obstacles. The season will end with a double elimination tournament.

Youth Boxing provides a great full body workout. Participants will be introduced to boxing stances, movements and punches. This is a no-contact class, there will be no sparring. Kids will practice their skills with mitts, pads and the instructor.

A new exciting program introduced this year is theater. Instructor Kenna Dalley Higgins will engage the participants in one aspect of acting per week, such as voice, movement, and creating a character. Weekly activities will include: individual and group activities, acting games, vocal work and performing a monologue, with some attention to theater tech. There will be an end of season performance for friends and family.

Another engaging program will be the Challenge Room. Bring your friends together to solve riddles, find clues, use hints and strategies to solve a puzzle. Players will be given a secret plot and must find all the clues to complete each challenge within a specific time frame.

Finally on Monday, July 2nd, Parks and Rec will sponsor a field trip. Kids will travel to Whitney Recreation Center to climb on the 30 foot rock wall there with 4 different difficulty levels. Registration and field trip waiver must be completed by parents.

Parks and Rec coordinator Elmer Lopez encourages locals to utilize these local programs. Without adequate participation the individual program may not happen. Lopez said that it is hard to staff an empty program. These are all excellent ways to beat the heat and keep kids engaged throughout the summer.
