The 37th annual Hump N Bump offroad event came to Logandale last weekend, November 2-4. This long-standing community event has drivers meet at the Clark County Fairground to participate in guided trail rides through the nearby Logandale Trails area. This year, 180 drivers and their vehicles participated in this off-road vehicle rock climbing event.
The Hump N Bump is a fundraiser hosted by the Vegas Valley 4 Wheelers (VV4W), a Jeep club from Las Vegas which frequents the Moapa Valley area. “We are a low speed, low impact event,” said VV4W Hump ‘N’ Bump Chairman, Jeff Jorgenson. “We lead a guided trail ride and use that as a clean up event as well. We have placed signs to remind people to stay off the local flora. We encourage those around us to maintain the beauty of the area.”
Jorgenson brought a few of his canine friends to the event. Toby is an old dog reaching for retirement and Rueger is a pup working his way onto the trail. These dogs are trained to clean up camp and trail sites.
The majority of the trails visited by the Hump N Bump crowd are slow and low impact, but there are rock-crawling trails as well. One of these areas is called the Shedder Bowl. During one of the climbs, four-year-old Ryder was enjoying the ride in the backseat of a Jeep while his dad sat in the driver’s seat and his mom sat in the passenger seat. “Daaad!” he exclaimed every time they didn’t make it up the rock face.
Ryder’s parents, Apollo and Melanie Wade are with the club Total Karnage. This group took on the responsibility of recovering any and all vehicles who needed assistance on the trail during the Hump N Bump event.
There were 10 different Jeep clubs represented this year. Participants came from southern Nevada, Arizona, and Utah.
“We don’t want to close the trails, Jorgensen said when asked about the possibility of making Hump N Bump an exclusive event. “We like to have people come and watch. Unfortunately, we do have to ask that (spectators) don’t join during the event if they haven’t registered. There are waivers and insurance issues that must be dealt with first. Go before or after, but not in the middle of our trail ride.”
The event is limited to 200 registered vehicle participants. “Any more and it would just be too many,” Jorgenson said.
This year a Las Vegas Boy Scout group helped direct traffic on the trails. In addition, local Metro officers were there with their new side-by-side ATV. Local residents appreciated the water truck used to water down the dirt road leading out to the trails.
“It is important for us to co-exist with the locals,” said Jorgenson. “We always encourage shopping locally. We love this area and want to keep coming here.”
