The Lost City Museum hosted a booksigning event by author Jackson Ellis on Wednesday, November 7. Ellis wrote Lords of St. Thomas, a historical novel about the Moapa Valley ghost town of St. Thomas.

After reading excerpts from his book, Ellis answered questions from the audience about the authenticity of his writing and whether the events portrayed in the book were factual. He explained that he had done research on the founding of St. Thomas and its people before moving forward with the writing of the novel. He described himself as a history buff who enjoys using life experiences to create historical fiction.
“By doing this, the author can draw in his audience and make them feel they are part of the story,” Ellis said.

The people of St. Thomas were forced out of their homes with the building of Hoover Dam in the 1930s. Once the dam was finished, the lake began to fill and St. Thomas was inundated with the rising waters.

Ellis came a long way to discover the stories of St. Thomas. He actually grew up in the woods of Vermont. But he lived for a time in Las Vegas, between 2011 and 2013. During that time, he learned about St. Thomas from an article in a regional magazine. He was fascinated by the story and planned a visit to St. Thomas to see it for himself. This led to some extensive research into the history of the ill-fated community which eventually gave him an idea for a story.

While he did not personally know anyone from St. Thomas, Ellis said that he found himself drawn to the people and events that led to the town’s ultimate demise as he studied their history.
“It is much more fun to write about things I can relate to,” said Ellis.

One of the people in attendance at the reading commented that, as she read the Lords of St. Thomas, she felt the anguish and struggle the people must have felt, almost as if she had actually been a part of it.
Signed copies of Jackson Ellis’s book can be purchased at the Lost City Museum gift shop at 721 South Moapa Valley Boulevard in Overton, Nevada.

Museum hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. For more information about museum activities visit www.lostcitymuseum.org.
