A house fire completely ravaged a private home at Stewarts Point on Friday night in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

Moapa Valley Fire District stations received an emergency call at 8:28 that evening, alerting that a house and travel trailer had caught fire in the Stewart’s Point area. Thirteen volunteer firefighters from Overton Station #74, Logandale Station #73 and Moapa Station #72 responded to the call. Also responding on the scene was a ranger from the National Park Service.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the NPS. But preliminary findings showed that it appeared the fire was caused by electrical equipment in the travel trailer, according to Overton Fire Chief Steve Neel.

There was no one home at the time of the fire. No deaths or injuries occurred as a result of the blaze, Neel said. The structure and travel trailer suffered a total loss in property damage.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found both the travel trailer and structure fully involved in flames, Neel said.

It took more than 30 minutes to knock down the flames, Neel said. That time was extended because there was no source of water at the location.

“Of course, there are no fire hydrants out there, but the residents have a standpipe where they get water and haul back to tanks that supply their homes,” Neel said. “But we found that because the lake level is so low, that system isn’t working. So we had to go to Echo Bay to get water.”

Fortunately, all three stations are equipped with a large water tender vehicle which provides a total of 7,000 gallons of water. But in a house fire firefighters go through that much water in about 15 minutes, Neel said.
“So we had a little downtime waiting for water,” Neel said.

After the blaze was extinguished, firefighters remained on the scene for many hours to monitor and extinguish any leftover hot spots. They finally were able to leave the site at around 12:30 am.
