Local Author Talks About Recently Re-Released Book

Moapa Valley Progress

Alexandra Demers

Moapa Valley is home to many talented and creative people. One of those individuals is Logandale resident Alexandra DeMers.

As the author of a new youth fiction book called Threadbare: The Traveling Show, Demers hopes to reach youth in a unique way, through text.

DeMers received her degree from the University of Arizona, majoring in Anthropology with a minor in French. This background gave her the inspiration for her latest writing.

Demers’ father was the Director of the International Cultural Center at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. “This is where my love for the French people and culture comes from,” said DeMers.

She recounts that as a young child she spent a lot of time in the cultural center meeting people from different cultures and backgrounds.
“A lot of me went into writing this story,” Demers said of her book. “The traveling performers in the story are based on people I have met in my life.”

Demers has always had a love of history and the early 1900’s. You will find her and her husband, Michael, often dressed in vintage style clothing. “I had always wanted to dress vintage, but I didn’t quite know how to get started,” she said with a smile. “I am happy to have finally found my style.”

When asked where she found desire to write a novel, she remembers a series that was very popular in college. While she waited for the books to become available in the library, she finally decided to buy a copy. After reading this book, she realized that not everyone, including herself was in love with the storyline. This is where her inspiration came from. She wanted to write a story that was set in her favorite historical era, as well as one that would reach out to young people everywhere.

She describes the genre as alternative history. Self published through Amazon, DeMers has sold around 200 copies. She loves feedback from all those who have read the book.
“We, as self published authors really count on reviews,” DeMers said.

The first copy of the book was released in October of 2016. After its initial success, DeMers decided to hire an editor to help her with a re-release. So in October of last year, Threadbare had its second publishing.
“One new thing with the re-release, is that an additional scene has been added,” said DeMers.

She didn’t want to spoil it for anyone, but the additional scene is said to add more antagonist to the story.

Demers is an interesting and delightful person to talk to. She is passionate and excited to inspire young authors and readers. When asked about a second book, a huge grin appeared on her face.
“There is a second book,” she said. “But it is not quite ready to put into publication yet.”

Referring to her husband, Demers had this to say, “He is a fantastic source of support and inspiration. He is the one who actually pushed the button on my first publication.”

When asked how they first met, she recounted a funny story. “We met on Craigslist,” she said. “He was looking for a pen pal and friend to help show him around Arizona where he’d soon be moving. I thought I could be that friend. So after several emails, we met at a coffee shop, and the rest is history.”

Alexandra and her husband moved with their two children to Logandale in May of 2016. Local residents with young children may recognize the DeMers name. That is because Mr. DeMers works as a specialist of humanities at Grant Bowler Elementary.

Alexandra has loved her time as a stay at home mom and enjoyed working with the ladies at Cactus and Lace Weddings where she helps with social media, shipping and sewing. Also, Reyanna Jarrel, who is a photographer for Cactus and Lace created the cover shot for her book.
“We have so many amazingly talented people in the Valley,”said DeMers.

DeMers’ book, Threadbare: The Traveling Show is available through Amazon. Please leave a review on Amazon or GoodReads.
