The word “kula” translates to tribe, family or community of heart which is exactly what Megan Teerlink had in mind for students when she named her new Mesquite studio Kula Yoga.

Teerlink, along with yoga instructors, the Mesquite Chamber of Commerce and community members gathered to celebrate the grand opening of Kula Yoga on Tuesday, Jan. 8 with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 742 W Pioneer Blvd. in Mesquite.

Those who attended enjoyed the opportunity to see the studio and sign up for yoga classes.
Mesquite Chamber of Commerce President Carol Poulson welcomed participants to the event and introduced the studio.
“January is the month to get yourself in shape and Megan, the owner of the studio here, would be happy to help you do that and she’s got a fabulous schedule here,” Poulson said, inviting everyone to find a class that works for them.

Mesquite Mayor Allan Litman addressed the crowd and said how pleased he is to have watched the studio come together.
“It’s very convenient,” he said of the location. “I know most of you here so I’m sure most of you are going to sign up for yoga.
“Because I see a few of you who definitely could use it,” he said with a smile.

Teerlink expressed appreciation to those who helped put the studio together and made her dream a reality.
“This is my passion, you can tell,” she said. “And I’m so grateful I get to do it.”

Teerlink is a Mesquite native who moved away to attend school and returned while her husband was still in school. She previously operated Revive Yoga with her sister-in-law five years ago.
“I ended up having a baby and she had two babies and both of our hubands were in school full time,” she said. “It got too crazy for us and it just wasn’t the right time.”

She explained that her family life has come to a point that allows her to take the time necessary to focus on yoga.
“I love sharing yoga,” she said. “I love teaching yoga and there was nowhere to do that [in Mesquite].”
Teerlink was inspired to open her own studio and said that it just felt right.
“It’s super nice,” she said. “It’s small enough that our classes can be intimate and our teachers can focus on each student in the class.”

Kula Yoga employs nine instructors with over 20 classes per week. Teerlink said that there are various workshops available per month and that kids’ yoga will be offered in the future as well as the option to train to become a yoga instructor.

According to Teerlink classes are available for all levels of experience and age. She said that whether students are in high school or are 80 years old they have a place to go and can benefit from yoga. Having a welcoming environment for all is the reason that she named the studio Kula.
“I named it Kula because I wanted to create a warm and inviting community of people coming together to do good,” she said.
