No One Asked Me But… (January 16, 2019)

By DR. LARRY MOSES

No one asked me but… We have a partial government shut down and 800,000 government employees will continue to miss paychecks if something is not done soon. The problem is that the two major parties of government have refused to come to a compromise on the issue of border security.
Do not be confused, though. This is really an issue of two groups that are more interested in not allowing the other to gain what would be considered a political victory over the other.

Both Republicans and Democrats cry loudly that the other side refuses to compromise on immigration issues. Both the Republicans and Democrats believe that compromise means that they must be given exactly what they want or a small portion of the government must remain closed.

However, if one were to look up the word ‘compromise’ in the dictionary, he/she would find that a compromise has three distinct meanings. The first of which is an agreement or a settlement of a dispute that is reached by each side making concessions. A situation in which people accept something slightly different from what they really want, because of circumstances or because they are considering the wishes of other people. If you compromise with someone, you reach an agreement with them in which you both give up something that you originally wanted. You can then say that two have compromised.

The second definition is a negative one: a concession to something derogatory or prejudicial. The third definition given is: the breaching of a barrier.

In 2006, a bill negotiated by the Gang of Eight, which included Democrat Senator Charles E. Schumer (N.Y.) and Senator Richard J. Durbin (Ill.), declared that “not later than 180 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary [of Homeland Security] shall establish . . . the ‘Southern Border Fencing Strategy,’ to identify where 700 miles of fencing (including double-layer fencing). should be deployed along the Southern border.” Further, Democrats led by Senator Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi supported the building of a wall less than five years ago.

The Republicans have their hearts set on a border wall to help stem the flow of criminals, drugs, and illegal immigration into the country from our southern neighbor, Mexico. This follows the old, but highly accepted adage: “Good Fences make Good Neighbors.”

The building of a fence was also the desire of the Democrat Party until it became a program championed by their nemesis, President Donald Trump. In fact, over 700 miles of wall or fence was built under the guidance of Democrat administration under President Obama, with the full support of the Democrat senators and representatives who are now opposing President Trump’s efforts to extent the existing fencing.

They claim the use of a wall is ineffective, too expensive, and immoral. If the wall is indeed ineffectual, one must wonder why the immigrant caravan selected the un-fenced Texas border to try and compromise (the third definition of the word) the border in Texas rather than where the 700 mile border Democrat wall exists today?

The Democrats have their hearts set on solving the problem created by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). DACA does not provide a pathway to lawful permanent residence it does, however, provide temporary protection from deportation, work authorization, and the ability to apply for a social security number.

President Trump has stated he is willing to negotiate the DACA issue to the point of providing a pathway to citizenship for those brought to the United States when they were 16 years-old or younger and have been allowed to remain illegally in the country under President Obama’s executive order. President Trump has indicated that under his leadership the Republicans are willing to look for a pathway to citizenship for the vast majority of the 11-13 million illegal immigrants residing in the United States today.

Here are two issues the Democrats could and probably would receive support by merely agreeing to an extension of the wall that they have already built. That is the definition of compromise in the first incident.

Speaker Pelosi has tried to move the issue to the second definition of compromise: a concession to something derogatory or prejudicial. She now says that “a wall is an immorality.” However, as late as 2013, she supported a bill that required the construction of 700 miles of border fencing. Her home state of California was fenced under this bill.

One must ask Representative Pelosi if the wall now proposed in Texas is immoral, how does she justify the one built in her home state? If the building of the wall in Texas in 2019, is immoral, why was it not immoral when the wall in California was built to protect the people of California?

If the wall is immoral, why is Representative Pelosi not quoting President Reagan in his statement to the Russian leader “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”? If a wall is immoral, why has Speaker Pelosi not gone to the California/Mexico border and stated “Mr. Trump, tear down this wall”?
By moving the issue to a moral one, she is trying to justify her unwillingness to compromise on funding for the wall.

I would agree that if one takes a legitimate moral stand, one must not compromise. I, too, have issues I will not compromise on and I would hope each and every one of us can say the same. But one must wonder about the morality of a person who justifies the murder of hundreds of thousands of American babies each year but is willing to make a moral issue out of the building of a border barrier.

What has changed? The President calling for an extension of the fence is not a Democrat. He is the much vilified Republican, one Donald Trump.

Make no mistake, this is not about border security, it is about a further attempt to muddy the reputation of the sitting President that Democrats could well be facing again in the 2020 election.

Thought of the week… “Illegal Immigration is wrong, plain and simple. Until the American people are convinced we will stop future flows of illegal immigration, we will make no progress.”
– Sen. Schumer, 2009

“We simply cannot allow people to pour into the United States undetected, undocumented and unchecked”
– Sen. Barack Obama, 2005

“I voted numerous times when I was a senator to spend money to build a barrier to try to prevent illegal immigrants from coming in. And I do think you have to control your borders.”
– Presidential Candidate
Hillary Clinton, 2015
