The Power of Persistence: MVHS Reviews 2018 Resolutions

With the beginning of a new year comes New Year’s Resolutions. Resolutions, or goals, are set with the aim of self-improvement. Although many people start off enthusiastically with a long list of aspirations, it seems that as the year progresses, enthusiasm fades and checkboxes are left empty. Are New Year’s Resolutions ever fulfilled?

Five MVHS students who successfully fulfilled their 2018 resolutions offered commentary on their experiences of perseverance and self-improvement.

Maria Perez set her sights on maintaining a 4.0 GPA for all of 2018 and was successful in this endeavor. “It took hard work, but I was able to get it!” commented Perez, a freshman. “I just wanted to do my best and prove to myself that I could do it. I feel proud of myself, and my family was so proud of me for achieving my goal and doing well in school!”

Jairo Rubio Moreno had a goal to exercise every day. It took a lot of work, said the senior, but it was well worth it.

Kade Olson set a resolution to become more engaged in sports and to have better nutrition. “I wanted to beat my diabetes,” commented Olson, a freshman. “It would be a huge accomplishment.” Olson said the necessity of keeping his sugar levels stable motivated him to keep playing soccer.

Kaitlee Rowley told about the testimony and self-confidence she gained through consistently reading the Book of Mormon last year. She made a goal to read the scriptures every night. “I found it difficult at the beginning to read at night when I wasn’t home if or I was around other people because I was scared of what they would think of me,” said Rowley, a senior. “I grew to learn that it only matters what God thinks, and I am the closest to my Heavenly Father when I am reading the scriptures!”

Sophomore Alisa Wolfley said she was able to finish the Book of Mormon twice last year because of her diligence in following her New Year’s Resolutions.

It may seem like our resolutions don’t ever make it past January, but it is inspiring to hear these stories of those who persisted. Hopefully, these accounts will persuade those who have not been successful in past goals that it is not too late! Start fresh and make a change for the better this year.
