Southwest Gas and the City of Mesquite announced the arrival of natural gas service to the Mesquite area on Monday, Feb. 11 with the ceremonial “turning of the wrench” at Danielle’s Chocolates and Popcorn where the first batch of gourmet chocolates and popcorn was celebrated by this “first customer.”
Bringing natural gas to one of Nevada’s fastest-growing young cities marks a new era of growth and economic opportunity for the Mesquite community.
On hand for this occasion and ceremony were Mesquite Mayor Allan Litman, Southwest Gas president and CEO John Hester, County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick, several Mesquite City Council members, Danielle Atkinson, owner of Danielle’s, and members of Atkinson’s family.
“Bringing natural gas to Mesquite is a monumental step forward for us as a community and allows us to invite additional industries into the city, boosting our economic growth,” Litman said.
Hester spoke about what an exciting time this is for Southwest Gas and the residents of Mesquite.
“We’re proud to provide this clean, abundant and reliable fuel to Danielle’s and all our new customers,” he said. “[We] are committed to providing them with an excellent customer experience for years to come.”
Danielle spoke of her excitement at the new energy source that will allow her facility to operate dependably on a continuous basis without fear of running out of propane at the most inopportune times.
Southwest Gas has been fueling homes, businesses and fleets throughout the desert southwest for almost nine decades and serves more than two million customers in Arizona, California and Nevada.
The first natural gas customers in Mesquite are being served by a “virtual pipeline”. Compressed natural gas (CNG) is trucked into Mesquite and distributed via a pipeline which runs from City Hall to the intersection of Falcon Ridge and Pioneer Blvd. As the multi-year, multi-phase project continues, Southwest Gas will construct approximately 40 miles of pipeline connecting the city to the major transmission line located 14 miles north of Interstate 15. The immediate benefit to the city will be the addition of approximately 300 jobs during construction of the pipeline and supporting infrastructure.
Mesquite homeowners and businesses seeking additional information may inquire about natural gas service by contacting Southwest Gas at mesquiteoutreach@swgas.com or by calling 800-654-2765.
