The 11th annual Cub Scout Pinewood Derby which was held on Saturday, Mar. 16, was another exciting success. A total of 130 boys age 8-10 participated in this year’s event and were cheered on by family members and friends.

As per tradition the local Cub Scouts and their fathers put in a lot of hard work building their cars with hopes of being the fastest and most stylish.
“We spent probably three or more hours working on our car,” said local dad Greg Thompson.

The cultural hall of the Stake Center was transformed into a high tech raceway for the event. Overhead hung the statistics of all the winners for the past 10 years. This gave those attending the opportunity to see how other winners have done in the past. Several participants spent time reviewing those scores and comparing this year’s racing stats.

Each Scout received a baseball cap from NAPA Auto Parts after their race. Overton NAPA donates over 100 hats every year to this event.

Each local Cub Scout pack had its own timeslot throughout the day to determine the Pack winner. Then the finalists got together at the end of the day for the grand championship races.

The first place winner of the community-wide event was Taiven Totten from the St. Joseph Ward. The average time that it took for his car to get down the track was 2.7992 seconds. Second place winner was Carter Davis followed in third by Noah Whitmore, fourth Steele Meeks and fifth place Josh Linford.

The event was coordinated by Logandale couple JD and Erin Cornwall. The Bradshaw family also generously helped the Cornwalls to set up and run the event for the past six years.

“I just think it’s awesome that they puts together this event,” said Jason Wickersham, a dad from Logandale. “It’s a great way for the kids to learn and grow. It’s part of being a scout.”
