Fishing The Overton Arm (April 10, 2019)

By LOREN BROOKS

Rick, Gary and Sam keep talking about “Mooching.” According to Rick, the five fish they caught a week or so ago, were down deep. They were using the Mooching technique when trolling for striper up in the area of Marker 19.

According to Gene Kugach, author of a book entitled, Fishing Basics, mooching is “a modified form of trolling from a boat.”
The was developed for Pacific salmon fishing. It can be used in large bodies of water (like Lake Mead).

“When mooching, a heavy sinker is used to take the bait deep,” Kugach writes. “Then the boat is run forward a few yards, bringing the bait upward at an angle, before it is stopped or slowed until the bait returns to its original depth. The raising and lowering of the bait by moving the boat forward is a continuous process until a fish strikes.

“The difference between standard trolling and mooching is the different depths that can be fished using the stop-and-go technique. The same type of equipment that is used in trolling (spinning or bait casting gear) can be used when mooching, as well as natural or artificial baits”.

I tried “Mooching” recently with Arrow Smith a new angler on the block. He landed his first ever striper on an anchovy tipped with a bit of “orange”.

On March 18, Stan and Pat said they had a great day on the lake catching 14 striper and a catfish. They found the fish in deep water. They said the spawn will come about after the water warms up a bit.

Art and Ardine had a nice day fishing right out in the middle of the Overton arm, near 19, catching 4 nice fish. They returned Tuesday to the same location and caught 10 stripers, again in deep water, near 19. Art said when using an anchovy, they do not use a treble hook.

John and I paid a visit to Ron’s Repair, on Navajo Ave. for some work on John’s boat cover. If you need fabric or canvas repaired, Ron will take care of you.
Ron said his neighbor, Paul, came by with his fishing report, saying that his five stripers were caught on anchovies. Paul also came by my home and visited with me about his day on the lake. He said his biggest was about five pounds! He was fishing in deep water near Roger Springs Cove.

I also got a report from Lloyd and Carol who love to fish and love this change in the weather. Rod and two of his buddies were trolling with crank bait and caught 10. Bud and Walt caught 14 on crank bait.

Bryce and friends report that they caught 7 fishing up north of marker 19. Most of their action was after 1:00 pm.

So there you go. As Sherlock Holmes said to Dr. Watson – and I say to you readers and anglers, “you are the whet stone of my mind”.

Keep those lines tight and those hooks sharp.

My name is Charles Bilberry. I live in Las Vegas. I would like to know where is a good place to fish for crappie in near Overton Arm? Are there crappie in the Echo Bay area?
Also, where can you launch your boat at in the Overton Arm area now that the boat dock is gone?
My last question is where is a good spot to catch bluegill in the Overton area?

  2. Crappie are in the Overton arm also in echo bay old boat launch there are only a few places you can access from the road unless you have a kayak or small boat it will be hard to reach the crappie. Try places you see a lot of trees in the water. Echo bay boat launch you can launch and don’t have to go far. But check it may be closed due to corona
