MVHS Girls Take 1st In South

The MVHS Girls Track Team celebrates after winning the 3A Southern Regional Championship last weekend.

Moapa Valley High School was host to the southern track and field regional championships last weekend for the 1A, 2A and 3A.

When all was finished, the Moapa Valley High School Girls team had won the 3A southern regional championship. The girls bested Mojave who finished second, 129-120. Virgin Valley finished third with 89 points.

The Mojave boys won the boys title 196-78 over the Moapa Valley team which took second. Virgin Valley finished third with 73 points.

The top four placers in each event qualified for the state meet on Friday and Saturday at Desert Oasis High School in Las Vegas. The Pirates saw several of these individual state qualifiers.

On the girls’ team, Ashlyn Western won the 1600 meter and 800 meter titles with times of 5:31.13 and 2:26.67 respecgtively. She also placed third in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.74.

MVHS freshman Emma Humes won the 3200 meters with a new school record of 11:58.95. In doing this, she beat the school record set years ago by her mother, Heather Humes, by six seconds. Humes also placed second in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:34.33.

Hanna Watson won the pole vault with a vault of 10 feet. She placed third in the long jump with a leap of 16-02 and fourth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.20. She finished fourth in the triple jump as well with a jump of 32-9.25.

Faith Witter and Elin Rohdin won second and third place in the pole vault, Witter vaulted 8-06 and Rohdin made 8-00.

The 4X800 relay team consisting of Shelby Olsen, Emma Humes, Andi Hillstead and Ashlyn Western won their event with a time of 10:34.00.
The 4X200 relay team consisting of Bailee Andrew, Alexis Gould, Coy Overson and Skotlyn Hill placed fourth with a time of 1:52.19.
Hill also placed fourth in the 300 meters with a time of 48.71.

The boys team also had some state qualifiers.
Jerrick Stastny place fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:04.05.
Preston Humes placed fourth in the 1600 meters with a time of 4:41.17. Humes was also second in the 3200 meters with a time of 10:02.64.

Hunter Davis placed fourth in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 17.07.
The boys’ 4X200 meter relay team placed fourth consisting of Carson Heiselbetz, Lex Bowman, Jayme Carvajal and Tristan Lehman with a time of 1:40.87.

The 4X800 team placed second with a time of 8:27.52. That team consisted of Grady Call, Bryton Dorsey, Preston Humes and Jerrick Stastny.
Josh Cox placed second in the discus with a throw of 132-04.
Yadon Witsken placed fourth in the pole vault with a vault of 11-00.
Lehman placed third in the long jump with a jump of 19-09.5.
