Local Donors Help Get MVHS Seniors Started

Nearly $118,000 in scholarships have been awarded to members of the Moapa Valley High School graduating class of 2019 to help in their next educational endeavors. Students receiving many of these awards, and other academic honors, were recognized at the school’s annual Senior Awards Night held on Wednesday May 15 in the MVHS Ron Dalley Theatre.

During the evening, about 70 different students were presented with nearly 200 different academic, athletic and scholarship awards.

Nearly $83,000 in the total scholarships awarded were donated by local families, businesses and groups.

“It is another great year for local scholarships,” said MVHS College/Career Center Specialist Connie Robertson. “We are so appreciative for the support and generosity of the people and business-owners who would donate to our students in this rural community.”

MVHS principal Hal Mortensen agreed. “We don’t have a lot of businesses or other entities to choose from in our small rural area,” he said. “But each year we have people, business owners and groups who come out of the woodwork to help provide a start for our kids. It is exciting to see.”

The scholarship awards began with the Grant M. Bowler Pursuit of Excellence Award, established by the family of the former MVHS principal to honor the students with the highest combined total of extracurricular activity points and grade point average. The winner of the $1,000 award was Lainey Cornwall, with a runner-up award of $200 going to Grady Call.

Barley Lindsey of Vitalant, previously known as United Blood Services, recognized a group of National Honor Society students for their role in organizing a series of successful blood drives throughout the year. Scholarships of $750 each went to Grady Call and Ashlyn Western.

On the subject of agriculture. several scholarships were awarded. FFA advisor Denise O’Toole announced that the MVHS AG Education Scholarship of $500 would go to Makae Pulsipher. O’Toole also awarded $500 Green Ambassador Program Scholarships to Lainey Cornwall, Camille Hardy, Hanna Mortensen and Sierra Staheli. Liz Adams announced the recipients of the $250 Wes Adams Memorial Scholarships which went to Sarah Adams, Cassidie Jones and Shyanne Matheson.

Dr. Lance Robertson then announced recipients of the Project “Get Smart” Scholarship. This award is donated by Dr. Ann Rice of Mesquite who has been a great supporter of local schools, Robertson said. Scholarships of $1,000 each were awarded to Grady Call, Camille Hardy, Cassidie Jones, Abby Rose and Yadon Witsken.

The Mesquite Elks Lodge Scholarship of $1,000 was awarded by Janet McDonald to Ashlyn Western.

Eight students received scholarships from Overton Power District of $1,000 each. These included Emilie Barraza, Evan Conger, Gannon Hanevold, Ashlynn McClure, Gabrielle Shiozawa, Sierra Staheli, Ashlyn Western and Averee Widdison.

Several scholarships were given in memory of several former Moapa Valley residents who valued education. The George W. Turner Memorial Scholarships of $1,000 each were given to Dallas Larsen and Rebecca Rebman. The Lysha Marshall Memorial Scholarship of $500 was awarded to Jamie Leavitt. The Boyd Applegate Memorial Scholarship of $500 each was given to Jesse Robison and Sierra Staheli. The John Z. Robison Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $500 each was given by the Moapa Valley Progress to Gannon Hanevold, Gabrielle Shiozawa and Miranda Robison. The Wayne H. Robertson Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 each was given to Italia Bracamontes, Jamie Leavitt and Kaitlee Rowley. The James Lee Bishop Memorial Scholarship for $1000 each went to Luke Hauver, Myriam Leavitt, Olivia Williams and Yadon Witsken. The Robison/Sandoval Memorial Baseball Scholarship for $1,000 was awarded to Chase Hadley.

America First Credit Union awarded $1,000 scholarships to Grady Call, Alyson Evans, Reanna Lyon and Abby Rose.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Las Vegas awarded Daesy Parra, Sierra Staheli and Ashlyn Western with $1,000 scholarships.

The Moapa Valley Television District awarded its MV Communication Scholarship of $750 each to Gannon Hanevold, Victoria Pray and Gabrielle Shiozawa.

The Moapa Valley Art Guild announced scholarships of $1,000 each to Jamie Leavitt, Reanna Lyon and Kelly Robison; with Miranda Robison receiving $1,500.
Primex Plastics of Mesquite awarded Daesy Parra a scholarship of $500.

The “YOU” Deserve It Scholarship of $1,000, donated by an anonymous donor to a student who has shown kindness in the community, was awarded to Jairo Rubio Moreno.
Hannaa Mortensen and Marina Mortensen were awarded the Moapa Valley Performing Arts Scholarships of $750 each.

The MV Booster Club awarded a total of ten $500 scholarships. Recipients included Emilie Barraza, Evan Conger, Gannon Hanevold, Camille Hardy, Shyanne Matheson, Hanna Mortensen, Abby Rose, Sierra Staheli, Maliyah Totten and Ashlyn Western.
The Cal & Tonia Payne Vocational Scholarship was awarded to Miranda Robison for $2,500.

The Clark County Farm Bureau awarded Sarah Adams with a $1,000 scholarship, and Shyanne Matheson with $500.

Mikelle Erickson, Bria Scatterday and Ashlyn Western were announced as the recipients of the Lin’s Marketplace Scholarship.

The Lance K. and Connie B. Robertson Leadership Scholarship was awarded to Gannon Hanevold for $1,000.

The Moapa Valley Rotary Club awarded four scholarships of $2,000 each. Recipients for these awards were Sarah Adams, Emilie Barraza, Lainey Cornwall and Gannon Hanevold.

The Karen Alsum Insurance Agency Scholarship went to Alyson Evans for $1,000.
The Dennis and Linda Anderson Family Trust awarded Hanna Mortensen a $2,000 scholarship.

The Carson Family Scholarship for $1,000, a graduation cap with Mickey Mouse ears and other various and sundry prized items were awarded to eight different students. Recipients included Grady Call, Shyanne Matheson, Alexandria Peay, Abby Rose, Gabrielle Shiozawa, Maliyah Totten, Ashlyn Western and Madison Wolfley.

The MVHS National Honor Society chapter recognized Alyson Evans with a scholarship award of $300.

Robertson also announced that the Public Education Foundation would be awarding no less than ten MVHS students with an array of scholarships from various regional foundations, businesses and institutions. These awards totalled nearly $23,000 in scholarships to local kids, she said. Recipients included Katelyn Garlick, Elena Ramirez, Daesy Parra, Camille Hardy, Evan Conger, Gabrielle Shiozawa, Ashlyn Western, Hanna Mortensen, Gannon Hanevold and Italia Bracamontes.

Academic awards were also given at the event. These included Student Council recognitions, Athletes of the Year, MVHS Spanish awards, Science Awards, and Math Awards.

The Mutual Fund Scholarship was awarded to Kennadie Burt for $200.
The Advanced Art Studies Outstanding Artist Scholarship of $750 was awarded to Reanna Lyon.

The ‘M’ Powered Award was earned by Emilie Barraza, Grady Call, Evan Conger, Lainey Cornwall, Alyson Evans, Gannon Hanevold, Camille Hardy, Luke Hauver, Reanna Lyon, Hanna Mortensen, Daesy Parra, Miranda Robison, Abby Rose, Bria Scatterday, Gabrielle Shiozawa, Sierra Staheli, Ashlyn Western, Averee Widdison and Yadon Witsken. A drawing was held to determine the winner of two $500 scholarships. The money went to Emilie Barraza and Reanna Lyon.

Connie Robertson pointed out that this was the first full year that local scholarship donors worked through the Moapa Valley Educational Foundation (MVEF) to administer their scholarship funds. Most of the local scholarship donors used the Foundation to distribute funding.
